corded to the young lady for whom
they art intended. The votei are
counted twice, so there can be no
mistake as to the proper number of
ballon accorded to each candidate.
The votea are always open for inipec
tion to insure a fair deal.
HOW TO WIN.
The eatiest and quickest way to win
li for candidatei to ask their friendi to
prepay their inscription for 6 to 12
months. It costs the aubscriber noth
ing extra to do thii and they are
aved the annoyance of weekly and
monthly collectioni. By to doing you
receive a ipecial vote ballot which la
good any time during the contest.
Orden for the prizes will be given
the luccessful contestants at the
tlose of the contest; same may be
used by the contestant herself or
disposed of in any manner ihe may

Any young lady reiiding in the
above mentioned territory is eligible
to compete in thii contest.
Anyone who deiirei to vote In thii
conteit may do so by ballots cut
from the Daily and Weekly Aitorian,
or by ipecial vote coupon! obtained
bv subscribing to the Aitorian. The
couponi lecured by subscribing to
the Astorian may be held as long ai
desired and voted at any time up to
the deiired dose of the contest, but
ballots cut from the Astorian are only
good for one week from publication
and will not be counted if voted after
the date printed on the ballot.
Persom living in one district are
not confined to voting for ladies in
V their own particular district, but may

The offer affords the girls of As
toria and aurrounding territory an
excellent opportunity to travel or re
ceive a business education at the ex
pense of the Astorian.
DISTRICTS.
The districts will be divided as fol
lows: First district will include all
the City of Astoria east of Twenty
second street; second district will in
clude all the City of Aatorla east of
Ninth street to Twenty-second; third
district will include all the City of
Astoria weit of Ninth atreet to city
limiti; fourth district will include all
the towns in and around Ilwaco and
Chinook; fifth district will include the
towns of Hammond, Warrenton and
Seaside.
HOW THE PRIZES WILL
BE DISTRIBUTED.

the young lady receiving the largest
number of votes in the the five districts-

FRANK J. DONNERBERO.
Frank J. Donnerberg, who several
months ago opened a handsome jew
elry atore at 574 Commercial street,
hat won a reputation that has brought
him what is perhsps the best trade in
the city. After 16 years' experience in
the large jewelry and watchmaking
stores of San Francisco and Portland.
Mr. Donnerberg came to Astoria and
opened a small place at 110 Eleventh
street, confining himself largely to
repairing watches, and carrying a
small stock of jewelry and watches.
His customers found him a good
watchmaker and discovered they were
given fair treatment and patronized
him liberally, enabling him to in
crease his stock rapidly. Mr. Donner
berg is a broad-minded busineis man,
and hii up-todate itock include! all
the newest styles which he purchases
from New York and San Francisco
wholesalers, and hia establishment is
a credit to the city.

OUT-OF-DOOR CARD PARTY
A simple but unique morning card
party may be given by the hostess
who hat a lawn or large porch on
which to entertain her guests. Cover
the tables with green cheese cloth in
a pretty shade. For tally cards use
leaves from the oak or maple tree, as
these are good shape and do not with
er easily. Gold paper stars or circles
are used to keep score, and may be
had at any stationer's. The prizes
may be a dainty white fan with pos
sibly a suggestion of green for first
prize, and a huge palm leaf with a
bow of green ribbon for the booby.
The refreshments are sandwiches of

other delicate green filling, and iced

marked a little with water-color paint.

be used, or a white cake with a touch
of pistachio in the filling. Green and
white pepcrmints may be served dur
