Police Court
A tailor was tried at police court
rcsterday on the charge of vagrancy.
The sentence was withheld by Judge
Anderson as the man is about to leave
on a sea voyage.
Examined Today
John Nelson, who has been a coun
ty charge at the St. Mary's hospital
for the last four months was removed
to the city jail yesterday, where he
will be examined for insanity today.
School Elections
One week from Saturday there will
be school elections held all over the
State of Oregon for the election of
the new directors and clerks of the
various districts.
Sweden, Once More
Anders G. Kohlandcr, a native of
rugged Sweden, was the only one to
tile a declaration of intention in the
matter of American citizenship yesterday.

court yesterday afternoon, and
mulcted in the sum of $10, by way of
(me, which he promptly paid and was

yesterday appointed with the custom
ary authority, three men to the de
part, to-wit: J. Murray, to Hose No,

Grace Episcopal Church
At a meeting of the Ladies' Guild
of Grace Lpiscopa! Church that was
held Tuesday afternoon the election
of officers were: Mrs. H. G. Van
Ducn, president, to succeed Mrs. E.
M. Baker, all of the other officers
were re-elected.
June Term Opena
The county court of Clatsop county
met in regular session yesterday
and devoted the major part of the
day to reviewing the filed claims
against the county" and ordering war
rants therefore.
Married Yesterday
Mr. Carl Thane Simmons and Miss
Edith Mac Pohl were married at the
home of the bride on Franklin ave
nue yesterday at noon in the presence
of a few intimate friends. The cere
mony was performed by the Rev. G.
Rydquist. The newly married couple
will leave Astoria Sunday next for a
trip through Oregon and California.
Appointees in Forestry
Washington and Oregon appointees
in the forestry service, as- reported by
the department, are Philo M. Wil
liams, forest guard on the Wenatchee;
H. A. Woodworth andj Potter Bayer,
as guards on the Chelan reservation.
In Oregon Charles Coe has been ap
pointed a guard in the Lincoln res
ervation. Rumored Purchase
The Morning Astorian was placed
in possession of the important and
mooted fact that the entire interest of
the Old Oregon Mills, at Warrenton,
in this county, has been purchased
outright by the A. B. Hammond in
terest. It could not be confirmed last
night from any source of authority;
but it hails from sources not likely to
be mistaken in the premises; and if
true, is significant of large develop
ment of the Hammond properties in
that neighborhood.
Nabbed Yesterday-
Robert Casey, the man who was in
dicted by the grand jury last Septem
ber for an atempted rape upon the
person of Miss Hakala near Olney,
but who fled the country, and for
whom Judge McBride issued a bench
warrant, with bond fixed at $1000, had
the temerity to return to this city a
day or two ago and engage at work,
thinking perhaps he had been forgot
ten, was nabbed by Deputy Sheriff
Archie McLean yesterday afternoon
and oleked in the county jail, in de
fault of the bond required, and he
will answer in full before the Circuit
Court at the ensuing term.
Grist to the Mill
Word was received in this city last
night from private sources that Co
lumbia county gave the "Fish-wheel"
bill 679 affirmative votes and 959 nega
tives, and gave the "Gill-Netters"'
bill 1 187 yeses and 404 nays. That Yam
hill county gave the former 1454 af
firmatives and 1117 nays; while voting
"yes" 1536 times for the lower river
bill and 908 nays. This gives the hon
est bill deivsed to save the salmon in
dustry, additional leeway of 2021
votes by direct majority and by the
negative ballots cast against the
make-shift from the predatory fishermen.

Dr. Lome Manion of the St. Mary's
hospital left for Portland last night
to visit his mother at his home there
and also to take in the Rose Show,
lie is expected to return sometime
Wednesday.
Mrs. A. J. Hill of Rainier was in
the city yesterday, going down to
Spikanon to be present at the Schmidt"
Parker nuptials.
Mrs. Carl Knutson went to the me
tropolis yesterday to attend the Rose
Festival and visit with friends for a
few days.
Carl Franseen went to Portland
yesterday morning to visit with his'
family and take in the glories of the
R. F. He will be back on Sunday
next.
Miss Mabel Simington left on yes-
terday morning's train for Portland,
whence, after taking in the Rose
Festival, she will proceed to Eugene
to visit friends.
Fred Johnson and his family have
gone to Portland to attend the Rose
Carnival. They will return about
Sunday.
Mrs. M. A. Cordiner left on yester
day's train for Portland where she
will visit relatives and take in the
Rose Show.
A. R. Foote of the Lewis and
Clark has received the contract to
grade Commercial street between first
and Third street. He will, after this
week, be permanently located in As
toria. .
Harrison Allen, the former district
attorney, is in the city,
M. E. Nutting of Tacoma is in the
city a guest at the Occident.
J. B. Savage, a resident of Tacoma
is at the Occident.
W. R. Maffet is at the Occident. He
is down from Portland.
J. W. Barker, a resident of Salt
Lake City is in the city stopping at
the Occident
Ben Robinson from Chicago is at
the Occident.
W. B. Willcox, a resident of Spo
kane, is registered at the Occident.
W. R. Hollister is down from
Portland, stopping at the Occident
Hotel.
Marine Matters
The steamer Johan Poulsen was an
arrival from the Bay City yesterday,
going on up the river for her out
ward load of lumber. The steamer
Tallac came down the river yesterday
morning early and went directly to
sea with a big cargo of lumber. The
steamship Yeddo will finish loading
today at the T. P. docks, and will sail
for San Francisco at daylight tomor
row morning. The Spencer came
down yesterday on her schedule time
and went back with a number of As
torians bound for the R. F. The
Kamm steamer Undine was doing
good business yesterday, leaving up
from this port on time last evening
with a good list above and below
stairs.

Chamber of Commerce rooms. A
