THE PATRIOTIC DOLLAR.
There are patriotic men and women,
galore, in every community in this
broad land who flame into hot rebel
lion at the merest whisper of re-j
proach against their town or city or
county, or place of residence and
revenue; who mouthe and froth and
yawp on the instant some flat truth is
told of them and their management of
that town or county or home; who
throw spasm after spasm of virtuous
indignation at every criticism cast
their way and especially if the stric
ture be so true that denial is futile;
and there are other patriots, who,
knowing the limitations that hedge us
all in, strive manfully to make the
most and best of deplorable condi
tions and by word and deed, timely
and generous, try to save that same
community from the touch of reac
tion and inertia. The difference be
tween the patriots alluded to may be
traced to the dollar, the dollar
oatriotic. and the dollar-reccdent
These dollars are at the bottom of
the status of every community in the
country; they account for the lethargy,
the poverty of progress, the cold in
difference, the abnegation, and com
mercial paralysis, of the community,
or, again, they tell of the life, the
spirit of success, the charm and pow
er of progress and prosperity, the
certainty and assuredness of being
and doing and living in recognized
and acceptable and np-to-date fashion
This is the story of the patriotic dol
lar everywhere on earth.
Is Astoria bankrupt at this coin?
. , LAND POVERTY.
We hear a great deal from many
of our friends down about this necl:
of -he woods of being land-poor, stag
gered by land taxes, and at wit's-cnd
to know what to do with their costly
possessions;' the constant reiteration
of ill plaint has gotten on our nerves
and set our sympathetic nature all a
quiver with desire to alleviate the
stress. We have no land of our own:
therefore we cannot enter into the
thing with the poignant and realistic
sense of its actual limit of strain;
but, conning the situation for avenues
of relief, we hazard the bald sug
gestion that they give away one-halt
of their land, outright, upon such
term's and conditions, and to such
people, as shall ensure the develop
ment, utility and enhanced value of
the other half.
If a man owns 500 acres of forest
land that he cannot improve himself,
it might be profitable to give some
energetic man or men, of family and
character, 50 or 100 or 200 acres of
it, to clear the tract, upon such terms
as would make it a matter of sheer
profit for all concerned, bring the
property of all within the purview of
the markets, advance its value, and
make it worth the while of all to pay
the taxes; if it be tide-lands, do the
same thing, with due provision that
all of it shall be diked by the bene
ficiaries, and make the gift reversion
able in the event of default, either by
mortgage or the terms of gift; if it
be water-frontage, give a modicum of
it to the man who will put a mill or
a factory or a dock and warehouse, or
any appreciable improvement upon
his share of it, thus redeeming it from
desuetude and making that which re
mains to the donor of some distinct
relative value. Give it away, and
civilize it; bring it within the radius
of activity and determinable value.
This beats lugging it around through
life, or several lives and generations,
barren, profitless, inept, inert, im
poverishing its owner to a point ana
lagous to its own impoverishment.
We realize the effrontry of such a
suggestion right here in Astoria but
our interest in these unhappy owners
of too much burdensome property
inspires us with unusual courage and
we dare urge this expedient for their
good as for that of the city and coun
ty. It is the way things are done in
other live communities, and always
with magnificent results. We know it
will fall flat, so flat we may not be even
reproached with our temerity; but the
knowledge of having done our poor
best to give a cue, a hint of salvation,
compensates for what of sneer and
denial must ensue.

turned, that the country at large ha.i
gotten into the habit of peering
Oregon-ward in her electoral season
to note what new political innovation
is to be sprung out here; anil it has
generally had something to laugh at,
to grieve over, to sneer upon; and
but blamed little to inspire its pride
and popular interest. It has been no
worse, perhaps, than any of the other
States where overwhelming party
dominance has been flagrantly, un
wisely and even evilly used; but in
lone summer election, detached, and
leading, has given it a spectacular an I
distinct prominence unnoted in. tlio
massed elections of November.
Wc can easily imagine the people,
everywhere, wondering if the famous
old Republican strong hold that h;n
twice elected a Democratic governor,
is so obsessed with its strange ami
perverted infatuation that it will elect,
even tentatively, a Democratic United
States Senator on Monday next; and
if, having done this, the false and
fatuitotis program will be confirmed
and branded in by its Legislature.
We could answer these unasked
questions, of course, but time must
serve the end of this folly, and the
nation will know all about it at the
proper moment; but for the living
hour this is the attitude of our fol
lows abroad in the country, and these
the doubts that beset them. There
may come a wave of sober second
thought, of mental re-adjustment and
clarity, of spasmodic revulsion to old
principles and pandered faiths, that
will knock these expectations silly
and cause momentary hope of better
things; but ?
