The Queen made a good haul on the stranded vessel and moved her from s mud bottom to a clean and sandy shallow near by, but did not succeed in getting her off; for the more she was hauled toward deep channel water the more her stern sank, and it was deemed inexpedient to do any further work at this time. It is said, now, that Captain Genereaux thinks it will be necessary to erect a coffer dam around the elton, line it, and pump out the water in and around her, in order to accurately ascertain the damage she has sustained; but this is mere guess-work and is yet to be confirmed. The steamship State of California was due last evening from San Fran cisco, but laid off the bar all night and entered early this morning. She had plenty of business, for this port and Portland. The steamer Redondo came in from the Bay City yesterday. She will load her hold at Portland and tak on her deck load at the Tongue Point mills here on her way to sea. The British steamship Yeddo left up last evening for Portland to com plete her cargo of lumber for Orien tal delivery. She took 1,100,000 feet from the Tongue Point mills. The steamer Nome City came down the river late yesterday afternoon, and will sail this morning for San Francisco. The steamer Asuncion was among the Sunday get-aways, leaving out for the coast of California, at 5 o'clock on that morning. The steamer Yosemite came down the river at 9 o'clock a. m. on Sunday and went to sea and San Francisco an hour later. The steamer Johan Poulsen went to sea and San Francisco early on last Sunday morning. The steamer Northland, outward bound for the Bay City, departed on Sunday morning last at 6:30 o'clock CAPTAIN POPE VISITS AS TORIA WITH HIS WIFE, AF TER AN ABSENCE OF SIX YEARS. Captain George Pope and wife were visiting friends in this city yestcryay: thev were crcatlv surprised at the progress made here since their last visit six years ago. Captain Pope is a pioneer snip masier ami marine surveyor of Oregon, having com manded one of the Hawaiian packets in the early 70s; afterwards serving Lloyd's Register of British and for eign shipping as ship and engineer surveyor for Oregon and Washing ton, retiring from the service at the ;ige of 62. six years ago. The cap tain carries his o years well; naie and hearty, he looks the typical ship master still, and one would imagine him readv to take command of either sailer around Cape Horn or an ocean liner across me racmc ai a few hours' notice. However said the captain when questioned on tins point, "I have no desire to again cross out over the Columbia bar. i have not been on a ship's deck nor in an engine room for the past seven years. 1 think I am entitled to a rest. Still I should like to see the bar improved so that the next gen eration may see vessels ot w teci draft and over cross out of Astoria; but it will never be done with the present jetty work. 1 have known the bar for SO years, and practically the depth has net increased to any appreciable extent. I am of the opin ion that, at no distant date, the United States engineers will grasp the prob lem. If a breakwater could be created outside, 20 fathoms line of sounding in the shape of a diamond and of suf ficient length, north and south, to pre vent the tremendous 7000-mile fetch blows, that are now hammering on the bar, from rolling in the sand, then the volume of water debouching every 24 hours from our river would cut the bar away in one month, entirely. You would then have a north and a south channel; no lightship would then be needed and you would be on a parity with Puget Sound as a har bor of refuge. You would also be able to have the entire Atlantic squad ron of battleships in your harbor and which no prudent administration un der present conditions, is permitted to allow now." The office of County Coroner is not a political but a judiciary ottice as much so as the Circuit Judge or Jus tice of the Peace. In aspiring to that office I would just as soon ask a Re publican, as a Democrat, Socialist or nonpartisan for his support, as the office should be and during my in cumbency always has been conducted without regard to politics. I have resided in Clatsop County for 34 years, my whole interests are here, and I expect to remain here. I have tried to conduct the office with impartiality and fairness and with a due regard to the interest of the taxpayers. The annual appropria tions of the County Court for the Coroner's office which includes, physi cians, jurors ana witness lees ana other necessary expenses such as boat hire have been $600.00 and the actual expense has often been much below this figure. I have always deemed it an honor to be Coroner and am willing to submit the matter of my re-election to the voters on my record during my long tenure in the office. W. C. A. POHL. E. We have received a letter from the Hood River Commercial Club signed by A. A. Jaync, president of that or ganization; P. S. Davidson, secretary; K. O. Blanchar, Charles Hall, Tru man Uutler, W. L. Clark and C. T, Early, directors, as follows: "We wish to call your attention briefly to the initiative bill for the creation of Hood River County. "The assessed valuation in the pro posed Hood River County for 1907 was $2,762,250, the area is about 500 square miles' and the population about 7500. "This will leave in Wasco County an assessed valuation of $5,475,720, and area of about 1646 square miles and a population of about 11,500, thus leaving it among the largest and strongest counties in the State. "The tax levy in Wasco County for 1907 is 14 mills, which would raise in the proposed Hood River County $38, 671.50 which would be ample to pay the expenses of operating the new County and leave a substantial bal ance. "Our reason for bringing the mat ter before the people by the initiative, is that under the constitution as amended, counties can only be creat ed by the legislature by a general law, and we believe the interests of this community would suffer greatly f we should be compelled to wait un til such a measure could be passed by the legislature. "Whatever you may be able to do for the support of this measure will be appreciated by the Hood River Commercial Club." Electric Railroad Proposition. Mr. F. L. Evans who has been in correspondence with us for some time s in the city looking into the advis ability of promoting an electric rail road from here to Seaside. He will let us hear from him within a short time. In regard to the letter from Man ager Tom Richardson of the Com mercial Club which asks that we make an exhibit in the club of Clat sop County products and suggests j furthermore that if possible we have a suitable woman appointed to stay at the exhibit and hand out our Uatsop literature, a motion was made and carried that the matter be placed be fore a promotion committee for in vestigation. The electric railroad proposition was discussed, for a length of time, but nothing of importance was decid ed on Mr. 1". h. Evans the promoter, was expected to attend the meeting and speak in his own way failed to ap pear which no doubt delayed the pro posed enterprise considerable. In connection to the promotion bill, a motion was made and carried to place same before a judiciary com mittee. In conclusion of the meeting some one suggested that the Chamber of Commerce meetings hereafter be held in the Odd Fellows' hall, as the Chamber of Commerce rooms' were sometimes overcrowded, but after con-1 siderablc discussion it was decided not to, and hereafter the meeting will always be held as usual in the Chamber of Commerce rooms.
