THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OREGON.
I e
- NEW YORK, May 21. Mae C.
.Wood, whose suit for absolute di
vorce from Senator Piatt has been it
trial fr several days in the supreme
court here. She was committed to the
Tombs prison late tonight after Judge
'Gorman has dismissed the com
plainant in her actions and ordered
ler held in $5000 bail on thy charge
f perjury. The handwriting expert
testified that in his opinion the body
of the letter in which Flatt was alleg
ed to have admitted his relation as
iusband to the plaintiff was added
sfter the senator's signature had been
affixed. More telling still for the de
fense were depositions of engravers
and stationers called by Piatt's cdun
el that the blank form upon which
the alleged Platt-wood marriage cer
tificate was made was not lithograph
ed until three months after date upon
which the marriage of Miss Wood to
Senator Tlatt' was alleged to have
taken place. Miss Wood was called
to the stand in rebuttal.
Piatt's counsel then moved for the
dismissal of the complaint. It was
forthwith granted by O'Gorman who
in rendering his decision said:
tannot credit plaintiffs evidence as to
the alleged marriage and the testi-
mony as it impresses the court is that
this is a most wicked design to sup
port a false and fivtitious claim by
forgery and perjury." Forthwith he
erdered Miss Wood committed to the
Tombs on a charge of perjury, fixing
ler bail at $3000. She was obviously
staggered by the sudden turn of
affairs and the shock caused by the
order of arrest which the court made.
She quickly regained her composure,
lowever, and by the time s-he reached
the city had rsumed her air of confi
dence which she held practically
throughout the trial.
At the district attorney's office to
ight it was said that Miss Wood's
ease would speedily be taken to the
grand jury if the indictment was
found. At a late hour Miss Wood
Bad not been able to furnish bail she
was remanded'and was still locked up
in the Tombs.
