Plan is Abandoned
The automobile party that had plan
ned to leave Astoria for Seattle in
time to meet the fleet on its arrival
there, going by way of Kelso on
barges, from here, have abandoned
the trip owing to the heavy and in
cassant rains that have prevailed for
the past week, and which have left
all roads practically impassable.

Pleasant Surprise-
About three score ami ten of the
uooil friends of Mr. and Mrs, L. A.
Larson nut at their home on Satur
day evening last without warning, to
congratulate them on the passing of
the 18th anniversary of their wedding
day. Tiny were happily entertained
and the evening was given over to
music and refreshments and a jolly
time was had by all including the
hospitable principals.
The Limit Raised-
It seems there were 17 good citi
zens whose names were not included
in the roster of registrations when the
books closed on Friday last, the for
mal announcement of their registra
tion being then in the mails and arriv
ing at the county clerk's office in yes
terday's mail. There were nine from
Seaside and eight from Svcnsen;
which raises the total to 3057, for the
county, which is better than having
them "withdraw" their names.
Do Business Thursday
Manager J. Driscoil, of the Union
Meat Company' new depot in this
city hail hoped to have that establish
ment open for the reception of the
first shipment of meats from Port
land, on yesterday, but says it will be
Thursday morning before he can
weigh in his 'first cargo, which will
probably be a full carload. The quar
ters set up by the company are very
clean, cool and inviting and are splen
didly ventilated and lighted.
First Aid to Weary
The Rose Festival Committee at
Portland announces that it will estab
lish and maintain during the great
week, an Information Bureau, to aid
people from out of town, to secure
rooms and entertainment, during the
week; and will attend to such mat
ters promptly upon the receipt of let
ters asking for such assistance. A
rather good idea, and a practical one
as the committee will have a list of
every available and desirable room in
the city.

niittcc in charge of the Astoria float
at the Festival, to permit its entry in
that line of march. I he chairman, Mr.
Lamar, has not yet submitted the
matter to his colleagues, and it is
not known whether the favor will be
granted or not, especially, since the
cost of team and driver is to fall on
the committee loaning the beautiful
car, a rather odd provision in view of
the distinct favor sought,
A Freak on Wires
The steamship Watson, from San
Francisco to Seattle, passed the Co
lumbia bar at 4 o'clock yesterday af
ternoon, and the United Wireless peo
ple on Smith's Point got into com
munication with her for awhile.
"Fuzzy" Ferland reports a strange
tale told hint by the operator on the
Watson, which was to the effect that
when the ship was four miles out from
the Golden Gate, the operator picked
up the strains. of the band music then
being uttered by the fleet bauds within
the harbor ,and so clearly that he
could easily distinguish the melodies
that were being played. This is one
of the rare instances of electrical in
duction or reflex or whatever it is
called technically, and has but few
records as yet, though it has been
noted in other relations, as, for in
stance, a wireless operator picking up
the message being telegraphed on a
wire that ran parallel to the telephone
wire that entcrd his offic. It is re
markable, all the same.
Excursions On and Off
The steamship Roanoke, which has
been chartered for the high-sea ex
cursion to the passing fleet of cruisers
and battleships, tomorrow, will enter
port late tonight or very early in the
morning tomorrow, and her passen
gers will be trans shipped to Portland
from here by rail. The steamer will
be in perfect readiness for the recep
tion of her crowd (already numbering
over 4X)), to leave out from the Cal
ender dock promptly at the hour of
10 in the morning. The O. R. & N.
people have been compelled, very re-
grctfuly, to call off their proposed ex
cursion, via the steamers T. J. Potter
ind Nahcotta, to Iwaco and Mcglcr
and North Head, on account of the
damage done to the new line of rail
way from Megler to Ilwaco, by the"
long-drawn storms of the past few
days, which has rendered the trcstling
and embankments of the line, decided
ly unsafe, a condition due to the new
ness and unsettled status of the road.
The Callcndcr fleet of steamers and
launches will also be in readiness for
the trip to Fort Canby and neighbor
ing points at 5 a. m.
Beware The "Rooter"
An Astorian, just returned from
San Francisco, whither he went to
help receive the fleet, tells of the
"rooter" as one of the Bay City's
most ardent and conspicuous features.
He says that in a vast crowd assem
bled to witness the great naval parade,
a sporty old chap who was doing es
cort duty to a handsome young wom
an, kept bobbing up in his seat at the
grandstand, to the infinite annoyance
of the people behind him. The root
ers began to call him down in vari
ous ways, at first mildly and politely,
and then with increasing directness
and keeness; finally his ubiquitous
back was assailed by a concerted yell
of "Sit down, Papa; oh! Papa, sit
down!!" and down he sat for good
and all. Then his gushy companion
did the rising stunt, thinking herself
immune, perhaps, on the score of her
sex; but, the boys, cut her complac
ency from under in short order by
yelling, with preconcerted text and in
unison, "Sit down, you pasadena
ostrich-farm!", which was quite en
ough for the young woman who wore
an immense ''Merry Widow" hat with
profuse and enormous plumes upon
it.
Battleship Excursion to Ilwaco Called
Off.
On account of a washout on the
Ilwaco Railroad Company's line the
steamers T. J. Potter and Nahcotta
will not leave the O. R. & N. dock at
7:30 a. m., Wednesday as advertised.
