SELECTING A TEAM
Olympic Committee Jubilant Over

Within the Past Year This Country

NEW YORK, May 14 Following
the Pacific Coast tryouts which were
leld at Stanford University in Cali
fornia, members of the Olympic com
mittee are jubilant over the fact that
everything now points to a winning
team to represent the United States
in London in July.
The only thing that is worrying us
sow," said James E. Sullivan, secre
tary of the committee, "is the picking
f the team. That is a hard problem.
Within the past month reports have
Seen received from all over the coun
try stating that some athlete has been
breaking world's records in practice.
If these reports are true there will be
many upsets when all the tryouts are
held, and perhaps some of those who
were looked on as sure winners will
f necessity be left at home.
"Of course this will not happen if

WASHINGTON, May 14. -The
Vreeland currency bill was today put
through the house under a special rule
by a vote of 184 to 14S. Fifteen of
the so-called insurgents of the ma
jority party voted with the Democrats
who went on record solidly against
the measure. The closing moments
of the debate were replete with excite
ment and republican enthusiasm caus
ed by the refusal of a great majority of
the democrats to go on record for the
Williams bill, which had been offered
by Kahn, of California, as a substitute
for Vreeland bill, in accordance with
the well laid plan of the majority
leaders to ascertain where the demo
crats stood on the proposition, which
it was claimed by several was sup
ported by Bryan. Ninety-three demo
crats voted "Present" which aroused
the republicans to a high state of hi
larity at the expense of the minority.

While reports of wonderful feats
have been received here, experts who
have heard thousands of these reports
before claims it was seasoned cham

They say they cannot see how such
men as Shaw of Dartmouth and For

with the discus, Melvin Sheppard, in
the middle distance; Grath and Flani
gan in the weight events; Glamor in
the quarer mile; Dray of Yale in the
pott -vault; Porter in the high jump;
3b- Emery in the standing jump; Bel
lars and Bonhagi in the distance runs;
Dan Kelley in the broad jump; James
Sullivan, in the mile run; Coe and
Rose in the shotput and Garrets in
any of the specialties he trains for and
competes in.
All of these have consistently and
persistently shown form that stands
out by itself and trainers claim noth
ing less than serious accidents can
prevent them from making the team.
: In the Marathon race, America is
iy no means left in the ruck. Within
the past year this country has devel
oped long distance runners that are
fcy no means below the average. Mr.
Sullivan, believes we have a grand
chance of eapturing that event this
year. Up to yesterday more than
$11,000 had been subscribed to carry
the team abroad and Mr. Sullivan ex
pects to have at least $15,000 by June
15. Judging that it will cost each man
Xrom $300 to $320 for expenses from
the time he leaves New York this
amount will enable the committee to
pick from 40 to 50 Men. With this
number every member of the com
mittee is sanguine of success. The
committee has decided to hold the
wrestling tryouts on May 26 and 27,
instead of May 25 and 26. In all prob
ability these tryouts wil only take one
night as the fact that only native born
or fully naturalized citizens of Ameri
ca are eligible will keep a number of
entries away.
pccially authorized to do
As soon as bill reaches the senate,
Aldrich will call a meeting of the
finance committee to consider it. It
is expected that the committee will
vote unanimously to amend the house
measure by striking out all amend
ments after enacting a clause and in
serting the provisions of the bill
which was passed by the senate. It
is not doubted the senate will approve
of the action of committee. The ef
fect of this could be to send both the
Vreeland and the Aldrich bills to a
conference.
SEARCHING FOR INCENDIARYj
CHICAGO, May 14. Detectives in
the employ of Chicago Board of Edu
cation are searching for an incendiary
who attempted to burn the Clarke
public school, containing 1600 children
at Ashland avenue and West Thir
teenth street.
The fire which started at the foot
of one of the stairways, on Monday,
was discovered in time to prevent the
spread of the flames. The lower steps
of the stairway had been saturated
with kerosene and basket of shavings
and paper set afire. The flames had
not yet caught the oil-soaked wood
when the alarm was given.
In the building there are 30 school
rooms. Three rooms are filled with
deaf and dumb pupils and two score
blind student are scatered through
the various grades. The attempt to
fire the building was discovered by
one of the mutes.
Terrified, he ran back to the school
room, grabbed Miss Martin, the head
teacher in the deaf and dumb --department,
by the skirts, and dragged her
to the top of the landing. Miss Mar
tin called the janitor, and the fire was
extinguished.
No fire alarm was sounded and but
few of the children in the school knew
anything about the tragedy that
threatened them. That the attempt to
murder of innocents was perpetrated
wilfully, princpal and teachers and
members of the school board do not
doubt.
