was in the Eagles' plot in Greenwood
cemetery.

Marketing Stocks
F. J. Catjerlin, the well known stock
and bond broker, of Portland, was in
the city yesterday, hunting up a num
ber of his clients and making some
new ones incidentally. He is pleased
with Astoria and will be back again
before the summer is over, with his
family. He returned to the metropolis
on the 6:10 express last evening.
Eighth Grade Exams
About 50 bright young Clatsopians
yesterday entered the field of the
eighth grade examinations that were
instituted in nearly all the school dis
tricts of the county. When they shall
have finished tomorrow night, their
papers will be sent in to the examining
board, and the list of sucessful young
sters will be announced from head

Rails All Laid-
The last rail of the I. R. & N. exten
sion, from Ilwaco to Mcgler, the dock
and station immeditcly opposite this
city on the Washington shore was laid
yesterday, and Superintendent Budd is
busy ballasting the new line and
making it traversable, in order to meet
the new service to be installed on it
June 1st. It will be in prime condi
tion by that time. !

The regular annual meeting of the
Astoria Freight Agents' Association
was held at the office of General Agent
G. B. Johnson, of the A. & C. R. R.
Co., yesterday afternoon. The usual
routine business was transacted, there
being nothing of a special nature ex
cepting the election of officers which
resulted as follows: President, G. W.
Roberts; vice-president, John Day;
secretary, G. B. Johnson.
AU Getting in Line
Superintendent E. R. Budd, of the
I. R. & N. Company, arrived in the
city last evening, on business con
nected with the projected excursion
that the O. R. & N. people are going
to run down from Portland on "Bat
tleship Day," in conjunction with the
steamers Potter and Nahcotta, and
his line of railway, from Megler; de
tails of which will be forthcoming in
due season.

lict steamer Minnie E. Kelton, the bar
tug Wullula, Captain Reed, went to
the wreck at midnight last night and
pushed her high up on the shallows,
for the purposes of lightering her of
the water now in her, and eventually
floating her to dockage at this city,
where her deck-load of lumber will be
discharged, the vessel then going to
the Willamette river for dry-docking
and general repair. Captain Gener
eaux could not speak definitely of the
extent nor cost of the work, but
thought her ultimate restoration well
within the possibilities, at an early
date.

will be succeeded at the old office on
Bond street here, by H. M. Delhanty,
of Seattle, who comes over at once

firm of Rothschilds, and who will be
followed at an early day by his family,
Mr. Johnston will return to this city
when he leaves the springs, but his
future is yet to be planned out in full,
in a business way.

James Finlayson,. who has been in
the Golden States for the past three
weeks on pleasure and business com
bined, has returned to his Astoria
home, satisfied to be here, and yet
pleased with many interesting things,
including the great naval display he

and returned with that gentleman on

come home, and the Chief to finish
his tour by a trip over into John
Bull's dominions. J. T. M. Hawthorne
is also back from his outing at the
Golden Gate, and charmed with the
pleasant experiences gained during his
quest there and the coming of the
great squadrons.
