When a community really desires some one thing and there is a mani fest expression of that desire, it were better to utilize the spirit that is ac tive and lively in that particular di rection and go after that one thing persistently and bring it in; and this is not in derogation of the wide range of that communities' necessities, for all may be compassed in due time but it is a hunch in direct purpose, "stick ability," concentrated effort and sin gleness of objective, that may per haps be more productive of real re sults than the dissipating of the local energies and monies in dozens of sep arate' quests and the consequent los- ine of them all or most of them. This community is not like a metro politan center" from which radiates a thousand influences and which holds an adequate reserve of resources, to be invoked and employed simultan eously with ease and success; we are of another class and latitude of people and means; and they should be con served and applied to the one givert thing for which our equipment stands, and that one thing attained, amplifies the impulse and assurance with which we will go after the next. It is a principle worth the trying, at all events!. GIVEN A PUNCHBOWL. cause it is one ot the great msntu tions of the State and must not be permitted to languish nor to suffer de rogation in contrast with the other great establishments of the same char acter all around it and with which it to be compared in days to come, with honor to Oregon; secondarily, because the sons and daughters of Astoria are to be educated there and BRYAN'S DAUGHTER. President Roosevelt has done an other good thing for the nation in calling together the Governors of the 44 States in conference upon the al ways absorbing question of the "state of the Union," and in asking the leaders of the great organizations of labor, capital, commerce, industry, science and civic progress to meet them for wide, comprehensive and universal advantage. It is exactly and entirely Rooseveltian in concept, and must, a few years hence, become a source of infinite inspiration and prac tical good to everybody. The as- . sembling, once each year, of the brains, authority and trained-power of the people of the United States can not fail to be productive of some tre- menrlmm strides alone the line of popular relief and up-lift; for, in such a gathering, some man, or men, are bound to produce the best that is in them and compel its recognition and adoption as a policy of aggrandize ment, of simplification, of relief, of mergence, of oooular ascendancy, of - o 1 - - profit, of each, and all, the new de partures that are to make for the highest march and mark of the country. We hope the idea of the annual meeting will grow in favor with those in immediate interest as well as with the commonalty, until it shall be in cluded in the accepted and inviolable programs of the day, and become resort for wise and rational rulings upon the questions and issues next and dearest to the public conscience; a board of arbitrament in the adjust ment of the living, challenging, ab sorbing inquiries and issues that possess the people and upon which they need enlightenment; though they hold the reserved and irradicable prestige of final mandate; in other words, that the great group shall become a clearing-house for the graver problems of the nation, and make their disposition a simpler matter with the people who mav look for unimpeachable counsel and get it, at the hands of the men they have raised to the dignities that warrant such an appeal. EDITORIAL SALAD The prosperity man has an easy time in an argument, because tne facts are on his side. In addition to being a good organ izer and a persistent pusner presi dent Roosevelt is likewise a philoso pher. He is satisfied with two battle ships and will be reconciled to a com promise currency bill. The railroads have announced an other increase in the freight rate onj fresh meats. Hogs and steers will soon be oavine Z cents a mile tor their rides and claiming the privileges of chair cars and Pullman sleepers. For years I was troubled with bil iousness and constipation, which made life miserable for me. My appetite failed me. I lost my usual force and vitality. Pepsin preparations and cathartics only made matters worse. I do not know where I should have been today had I not tried Chamber Iain's Stomach and Liver Tablets.
