Two Alarms of Fire
Two small roof blazes were the
means of getting the department out
yesterday, one in the morning, for an
alarm from the home of A. E. Peter
sen, on' Bond street, and the other
from the home of a citizen whose
name could not be ascertained, just
across Fourth street from the Astoria
Iron Works, in the afternoon. Neither
of the tire did any notable damage,
and subsided under the "Babcocks"
applied.

Car Versus Horse
An electric street :ar was swinging
down the Bond street hill yesterday
afternoon, at its usual pace, and in
passing' one of the Kelly Transfer
teams, one of the animals reared and
threw himself out in line of the
vehicle just when things looked to be
clear for all concerned, and got a
heavy blow alongside the head that
downed him with a rush and cut the
upper lip somewhat, but apparently
doing no further damage, as he was
driven to the Duane street barns, and
did his share of the hauling. But it
was a narrow escape.
J. P. Betts Dead
John P. Betts died yesterday after
noon at his home in Portland of
pleur pneumonia, aged 56 years. He
went home from here last Friday

Back From Alaska-
Ralph Ellis, once a well known to
bacconist in this city, with an estab
lishment at No. 321 Astor street,
which he sold one year ago, leaving
out for Alaska, returned to the city
on Sunday last, and says he is glad
to get back to Astoria. He will spend
the summer here, returning to the
north next winter, to care for some
valuable copper interests he has se
cured up there. He spent some time
in Juneau, Douglas, Valdez and Fair
banks, and at the latter place ran
across Ted Sutton, Harry Phillips,
Theo Brakke, all of whom are well
known here, and all are doing well.
Mr. Ellis declares that Astoria is the
livest , town of its size on the coast
and he cannot understand the talk of
hard times here; he says it is good
enough for him, at any rate. He is
glad to get back to smoother condi-

ECZEMA NOW CURABLE.
All Itching Skin Diseases Which Are
Not Hereditary Instantly Relieved
by Oil of Wintergreen.
Can Eczema be cured?
Some physicians say "Ye."
Some say "No." -
The real question is, "What is
meant by Eczema?" If you mean
those scaly eruptions, those disease
which make , their first appearance,
not at birth, but year afterward, and
perhaps not until middle age then
there can no longer be any question
that these forms of Eczema are cur
able. Simple vegetable oil of wintergreen,
mixed with other vegetables ingred
ients, will kill the germs that infest
the skin. Apply this prescription to
the skin, and instantly that awful itch
is gone. The very moment the liquid
is applied, that agonizing, tantalizing
itch disappears, and continued appli
cations of thi external remedy soon
cure the disease.
We carry in stock this oil of
wintergreen properly compounded in
to D. D. D. Prescription. While we
are not sure that it will cure all those
cases of skin trouble which are in
herited, we positively know that this
D. D. D. Prescription, whenever
rightly used, will cure every last case
of genuine Eczema or other skin
trouble, which did not exist at birth.
We know this. Anyway, your
self, will know that D. D. D. Pre
scription instantly takes away the
itch the moment it is applied to the
skin. Charles Rogers & Son.
Stop that itch .today instant
ly. Just call at our store and try
this refreshing and soothing liquid;
also ask about D. D. D. Soap. -
PERSONAL MENTION
Kenneth O'Loane, the man of paper,
Blake-McFall's paper, arrived in the
city yesterday and the sun came out
brilliantly at once and staid out; such
is the effect of the uileless nature of a
single drummer on Astoria; but he
says he is not to be single very long.
Pilot Frank J. Taylor returned
from San Francisco yesterday on the
steamship State of California, accom
panied by his entire family, who have
been sojourning in the "Poppy" State
for several months past. All are well
and glad to be at home again.
Louie Hartwig was a homing pas
senger on the State of California,
from San Francisco, yesterday. He
went down to witness the grand re
ception of the Armada and enjoyed
the outing immensely.

AN ORDER ABATING THE
RECENT ORDER OF COUNTY
COURT IN LOCAL OPTION
MATTERS HERE.
J. A. Eakin, the attorney, who went

Civic Improvement League, with a
plea for a writ of mandamus, abating
the recent order of the County Court
of Clatsop barring the petitions of
Precincts 2 and 3, of this city, from
holding a local option liquor election,
returned on Saturday, armed with a
peremptory writ signed by Judge
Thomas A. McBride, directing the
said County Court to forthwith order
the elections so petitioned for in said
wards, and granting five days in
which to present a motion to quash
the new writ and argue its merits
under the code.
The members of the county court
were served with notice of the writ

both these attorneys leaving here to
