ground current of clear water running
at a great depth beneath the surface
of Long Kland, entirely independent
; of the surface supply.

Hoeflcr's beautiful establishment is
to be the scene of a pleasant reception
to its huge clientelle next Thursday
afternoon and evening, to accentuate
the opening of the extension of the
parlors and the splendid new equip

invited, and the hours will be made
doubly delightful by the contributions
of the Misses Sundquist, in vocal and
violin selections, and by the orchestra
tion of the Astoria High School or
chestra. It is needless to say the
function will be on a par with every

PECULIAR DIVORCE.
NEW YORK, May 9. In a unique
ceremony at Bellevue Hospital a hus
band and wife were divorced, so far
as their church is concerned, at the
request of the wife, so that she will
not be compelled to obey church law
requiring a widow to marry her hus
band's brother or remain forever a
widow. The man and woman thus
separated are Noah Chalman aged 29
years, and Agnes Chartman, 21 years
old. The two were married on May
2. The next day the husband was
taken violently ill and physicians
have given him only a few days to
live. Mrs Chartman did not want to
become the wife of her husband's
brother, in case of his death as the
Mosiac law would have commanded.
Her husband consenting, the church
ceremony of separation was performed.
