THE MORNING
"DORA THOME" IS
COMING
BERTHA M. CLAY'S FAMOUS
LOVE PLAY TO PLAY HERE
SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE AS
TORI A THEATRE,
"Dora Thorne" will play at the As
toria theatre one night only, May
10th, and the announcement will no
doubt cause an unusual heavy demand
(or scats. No play in recent years
hat attracted so much attention and
it being so strongly patronized by
the public everywhere and the critic
are unanimous in their praise of the
production and its supporting cast
One cannot neglect seeing it for it
teaches a strong moral lesson, and
will be enjoyed by the old and the
young alike, and by people of all
walk of life. The manner in which
the management have producted
"Dora Thome" calls for only the
heartiest admiration.
The costumes are elegant and ap
propriate and the the movement and
group in of the persons taking part
in the action proper, have been ao
carefully considered, that naturalness
and dramatic effectiveness have never
been sacrificed. Yet a pictorial qual
ity which to belong to the old paint
ing of the English school has been
obtained. As for the scenes in which
the folks have part, these are among
the best offered here in a long time.
The exclamations, the evincing of
keen interest in what is taking place,
all has been planned and carried out
greater skill and quality than anything
similar that has been seen in any
production. The view of Earl Manor
lighted and rejoicing is also of great
beauty. "Dora Thorne" has always
been a favorite of all plan's and one
that is sure to please.
Amended Properly .
It is said that the ordinance grant
ing a street franchise to the Clatsop
Fuel Company, for the laying of
mains throughout the city for the dis
tribution of gas when the company
shall have developed that commodity,
has been sharply amended by the
way and means committee of the
common council, which had it in
charge, and will be reported back at
the next session, with provisions re
quiring that development within a
given period; that the company shall
furnish free gas to all municipal
buildings in perpetuity, and for the
paying of a license to the city in an
increasing ratio of limit, during the
life of the franchise; all of which is in
direct line with the suggestions offer
ed by the Morning Astoran yesterday,
and which are essential and proper.

Sad Details Lacking
Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Taylor, of this
city, have no further news' of the
manner in which the late, lamented
son James A. Taylor, met his
death in the mines at EI Oro, Mexico.
It is simply known that he' was
stricken in the mine, but whether from
asphyxiation by the gases in the low
er levels, or from a fall front the as
cending cage while under stress of
the gases, cannot be determined from
the meagre accounts of the distressing
tragedy at hand. Mr. Taylor yester
day received a telegram from U. b.
Senator Charles W. Fulton apprising
him of the fact that he had been in
consultation with the secretary of
state, and that all possible steps would
be taken to secure a suspension of
the Mexican federal statutes forbid
ding the exhumation of remains there

senting the Civic Improvement
League, of this city, went to Oregon
City last night, with full authority to
institute mandamus proceedings at
once before Judge Thomas A. Mc
Bride ,in deprecation and reversal of
the recent order of the County Court
of Clatsop in permitting the with
drawal of six names each from the
petitions heretofore filed praying for
local option liquor elections in pre
cincts Nos. 2 and 3, of the City of As
toria, and for failing to order the elec
tions so petitioned for. Mr. Eakin, It
is understood, has the assistance of
one or more attorneys, engaged by
the Anti-Saloon League of the State.
It has not yet been announced who
will handle the issue for the court
here. The matter is one that will
have to be carefully and quickly dis
posed of, if the terms of the statute
prescribing 20 days before election
for the adjustment, which will be
Tuesday next, at midnight.
Card of Thanks.
Astoria, May 8, 1908.
Morning Astorian: Through your
paper, I wish to " thank the many
friends who have offered their sympa
thy and assistance to me during the
period when kindly expressions were
of so much value in allaying that
grief of which the loss of a near rela
tive would import. Surely to know that
I have such friends here is most
gratifying, an assurance that my past
citizenship among you has been
worthy of your commendation.
