Admiral Uriel Sebree's pennant, fly
ing from the mainmast of the Tenne
see, which rode at the outboard flank
of the first division, with the Mary
land, Washington and Colorado on
the line, and the West Virginia, Cali
fornia, South Dakota and Pennsyl
vania, following. The fleet maneu
vered a bit while passing the Heads,
and fell into single column, all with
the very apparent purpose of making
an interesting display for the citizens
of this section who might have the
good fortune to be within view of it;
and they had more observers than
they knew, for Manager Lamar, of
the Western Union, instantly upon
receipt of the despatch, telephoned in
various directions to hilf homes and
downtown stores, and passed the
word as far as he could in the limited
time at his command. All who got
the messaee swung to the crests of
the hills summoning friends and
neighbors as they went, and before
the fleet faded from view many an
interested Astorian had caught a
satisfactory glimpse of the spirited
show. The wireless plants of the
ships were in steady communication
with the United Wireless at Smith's
Point, and all wanted the last and
best item of news of the day. "Fuzzy,"
the United operator on duty, gave
them the head lines of the Morning
Astorian of yesterday, and such other
data as he had St hand, and received
cordial thanks for his courtesey. As
the sun went down the great ships
fell below the southern horizon, and
the pleasantest incident of the As
toria day was closed.

Ditlikit Curly Haired Men.
It Is not generally known that there
la a well donned prejudice against
curly haired men when It comes to
choosing 11 jury. When linked to ex
plain the objection to curly haired men
a prominent lawyer said:
"When I was just starting life my
legal mentor Inculcated that Idea very
forcibly Into me. He said that curly
haired .men almost Invariably had been
the pampered darlings of their parents
and In their youth had been so ac
customed to having their own way
that they had grown up iu the belief
that everybody on earth was wrong
except themselves. In this way the
seeds of opposition were sown, and
as men they made it a point to dis
agree with everybody and everything.
If every other man on a jury voted one
way they would vote the other. They
usually are as stubborn ns the day Is
long; hence a curly haired man never
goes on a Jury If I can prevent It"

The Camel'i Eye.
The Nile Is essentially a river of si
lence and mystery. Even the camels
turn their beautiful soft eyes upon you
us if you were Intruding upon their si
lence and reserve. Never were the eyes
In a human head so beautiful as a
camel's. Thine 1b a limpid softness,
tin appealing pluintiveness, In their ex
pression which drag at your eyuipa
, tides like the look In the eyes of a
hunchback. It' means that with your
opportunities you inVght have done
more with your life. Your mother
looks at you that way sometimes In
church when the sermon touches ft par
ticularly raw nerve In your spiritual
makeup. I always feel like apologiz
ing when a camel looks at me. Exchange.
What a Stout Woman Should Wear.
"It is a mistake for a fat woman to
wear long, loose, sweeping lines. She
should wear fitted or semi-fitted
clothes, and choose dark materials,"
said a prominent dressmaker, notable ,
for making "good figures" of stout
women. "My success in making stout
women appear thin, however, is due,
in reality, to the fact that I can make
them thinner if they will take my
advice. I advise all the stout ones to
K to their druggist, get 1-2 oz. of
Marmola (being careful to get a seal
ed package), 1-2 oz. of Fluid Extract
Cascara Aromatic, and 3i ozs. of
Syrup Simplex. These ingredients
are mixed together at home and
taken a teaspoonful to a dose after
riueals and at bedtime."
"All three are simple, wholesome
remedies that cannot do harm to any
one. They even help to improve the
health, while the way they reduce fat
is truly astonishing. I have known a
woman to lose over 30 pounds be
tween visits to me. It takes the fat
off .symmetrically, too, without caus
ing wrinkles, does not interfere with
the diet in any way, and does not re
quire a whole lot of fatiguing exer
cises to show results. I wonder more
dressmakers do not try this plan of
mine, for the ingredents are cheap,
easily secured, and pleasant to take,
and, as I said, really improve ones
health and appearance.""
