Dr. Emil Enna, the musical director
of the Astoria Philharmonic Society
accompanied by Dr. A. Ai Finch, its
secretary, was out yesterdiny among
the music lovers of Astoria seeing
wh tln-v could do in the way of
gathering funds for the initial work

in securing the first half of the sum
needed and will take the task up later
and complete it.
Things have arrived at that pass
with the new organization, that the

Symphony Orchestra on the occasion
of its first concert, which will trans

The Society desires t known that

It is up to the cultured musician
and the musically gifted and inclined
in this city to ally themselves at once
with this distinctive and popular or
ganization, for their individual good
and pleasure, as well as for the credit
and advantage of the city itself. The
society needs all the active and tal
ented members it can get and the
thi hetter for all concerned. It
has a splendid future and cannot fail
to be one of the finest and most, en
eaeine attributes of the community
in due time.

TO STUDY SINGING.
Mrs.
W. F. Corey Going to Europe
to Study.
NEW YORK, April 29. Before
sailing yesterday on the Hamburg
American. Liner Deutschland. for
Europe with her husband, Mrs. W. 15.
Corey, formerly Mabel Oilman, , the
actress,' said she intended to go to
Paris to study for the operatic stage
under Jean de Resscke.
"I have several roles entirely learn
ed," Mrs. Corey sair, "which , I have
to finish with Mr. De Ressekc, with
whom I shall appear in grand opera
thfs season. I am not doing this with
any desire to appear again before the
public, but simply for the sake of the
work; I have always been used to
an active life and cannot remain idle.
I shall appear in opera, and hope to
be sblc to do something for a phase
of nitis'c in this country which should
be developed." :
Mrs. Corey said that she intended
to have a theatre in her own house
here, such as she has in her chateau
near Paris', so that she will be able to
give operas in wnicn sne win w
part herself and for which she will
engage the best singers and musicians
nrocurable. Three performances will
be, given of each opera, one for her
friends, the second fo the critics ana
musicians, and the third to create a
fund to develop the latent of those
who do not have the means to pur
sue their studies. ' She added that the
roles she expected to sing with Jean
De . Rezcke were America in "Aida"
and Carmen.
JUSTIFICATION .IS
COMPLETE
"FLAG S ALU ATE" IS NOT AN
ORDAINED RULE OF THE
SCHOOLS OF ASTORIA -EX-PLANATION
HERE IS TWO
FOLD. The following letter is self-ex-
planatory and of decided interest
when taken m conjunction with the
local article published in these col
umns yesterday morning in this rela
tion, and published only upon the
positive information that the "Flag
Salute" was a daily, and inflexible,
rule, at all times, at all public schools
in Astoria; and the Astorian docs
not hesitate to frankly apologize for
any injustice it may have wrought
through the misinformation; though it
has good reason to believe its inform
ant was quite as badly misled:
'Editor Astorian: We are so ac
customed in Canada -to speaking of
the people of the United State as
'Our cousins over the border that the
words 'forcian preceptress' as applied
to me in yesterday's 'Astorian' sound
ed strangely unfamiliar. I refer to
the article entitled 'A Timely Re
buke,' and as 1 am the only 'foreign
preceptress' in Taylor school, except
the principal, 1 take it upon myself
to place myself right in the public
eye.
i' First, I would say that no rule
was tfiven to me or the other teachers
by the principal, with regard to the
'flag salute,' and I was not aware that
such a thing was required. Secondly,
I wish to say that my room is by no
means the only room in Taylor school
that has not been in the habit of re
peating that salute. However, I was
the only teacher consulted as to
whether or not we saluted the flag
daily, by the vifitors.
"In the regular monthly meeting at
the Shivcly school this afternoon City-
Superintendent Clark was asked by a
teacher if there were such a law, to
which the superintendent answered
'not to my knowledge.' Various teach'
ers of different buildings stated if
there were such a law they did not
know it and had not made the flag
salute a part of their school, work.
"When the W. R. C. committee
brought the matter before me, I made
an investigation. True, only five held
up their hands when asked who knew
it, on being asked to repeat it how
ever, the response was almost unani
mous. On further inquiry, I find that
24 out of my 25 pupils knew the
salute to the American flag. That

one pupil comes irom Wyoming
foreign state.
'The pupils of Taylor school are
usually designated as 'foreigners.
They are, however, most of them,
American-born citizens, and I doubt
if :mv more loval American children
could be found in English speaking
schools.
"I am a Canadian, and loyal to my
native land! My pupils are Ameri
cans, and I teach them that if they
arc not proud of their flag they
hould be ashamed of themselves. -"If
I have not taught the flag sa-
lute-a set array of words-l have
endeavored to inculcate in the minds
of my pi'P'ls, the principle of
loyalty and to touch upon the chord
of patriotism that binds the heart of
every true born boy or girl.
"Words fail to express my appre
ciation of the kindly and courteous
manner in which the Astoria teach
ers took up my cause. '
