Yesterday was given over by the
assembled teachers of the State who
had been in attendance upon the
Clatsop county institute to the spe
cific jssces and Interests of the school
officers' meeting, which was presided
over by State Superintendent J. H
Ackerman. The day was fruitful and
crammed with element of instruction
and concern with which men and
women in that official relation have
most to do, and nothing was lost of
the advantage offered.
Professor Alderman dealt with the
subject . of "The Greatest Present
Needs of the County School," and
after clearly stating bis deductions,
took part in an elaborate discussion
with his colleagues, Professor Ack
erman, Aiders and Moore.
' "The Relation of the School Board
to the Teacher" was presented by
Prof. Herman Ahleis. and his con
clusions were ordered re-produced in
the Oregon Teachers' Monthly, by
those who felt thai it deserved wider
notice.
The subject of "Keeping Good
Teachers," was presented and handled
by Mr. Ackerman in his usual thor
ough and entertaining way, and was
formally discussed by Thomas Bush,
and Superintendent Clarke, of this
county. Other pertinent and engross
ing matters were dealt with during
the hours of the session, all of which
were treated exhaustively and inter
estingly; and the session closed with
the unanimous conviction that it had
been of decided benefit to all present,
and to schools of the State as well, as
all such congresses are.
At a meeting of the Clatsop County
School Board Convention, held in
Astoria ,on Saturday, April 25, 2908,
the following resolution was intro
duced and adopted by a unanimous
vote: 4
"Whereas, There has been much
difficulty in the past in keeping cor
rect records of the receipts and dis
bursements of the various school
districts of the State of Oregon by
the various clerks of said districts,
and, whereas, the county treasurer Is
much more competent to keep such
accounts,
"Therefore, Be it resolved, that the
members of the Clatsop County
School Board Convention, held at
Astoria, on Saturday, April 25, 1908,
do hereby memorialize the Legisla
ture of the State of Oregon, which is
to convene in January, 1909, to pass
a law relieving the school district
clerks in districts of , the second and
third class from being custodians of
the district funds and making the
county treasurer the custodian of all
such funds.
"And be it further resolved. That
a copy of these resolutions be fur
nished to the daily papers of the City
of Astoria, and that a copy be sent to
each of the Clatsop county represen
tatives to the Legislature of Oregon."
Fifteen officers were present and
eighteen teachers.

City Treasurer Thomas Dcaleywill
leave today for the California metro
polis where he will join Chief Gam
mal in the delights incident to the
coming of the great white ships, and
after a season of pleasure there, they
will return to Astoria, via Victoria
and the British possessions. During
his outing Captain Dealey will visit
his daughter who dwells near Sacra
mento, in the Golden State.
A Season of Pleasure
The cultured .people of Astoria and
all who delight in the highest type of
adroit and accomplished entertain
ment, will have one of the genuine
opportunities that offer but rarely. On
Wednesday evening next, at the First
Methodist Church, in this city, Wil
liam Lee Greenleaf, the impersonator,
par excellence, of the American
rostrum, will give his fall series of
delightful monologues, than which
there is no more charming entertain
ment on this continent today. The
treat is under the auspices of the
While the. joint conference plans,
and joint committee work, mapped
out by the Business Men and the
Civic League,, of this city, looking to
an agreement a between the local
optionists and the saloonmen, pro.
viding for the closing of the saloons
on Sunday, and the withdrawal of the
local option petitions, for both "wet"
and ''ftry" campaigns, have all fallen
to the ground because the saloonmen
could not accept all four of the pro
posals submitted by the Civic League,
there is yet a very fair chance that
the issues may; be amicably adjusted,
and considerable gained for all con
cerned, if there is no dictatorial work
done by either side for a few days.
The saloonmen have held a meet
ing of their own, and it is reported
they have entered into a specific
agreement and signified their purpose
to sec to it that those refusing to
join the compact are allowed no lee
way for transcending the general
rule, without distinct trouble. And if
this attitude is taken by them, it is
presumed that the League people will
meet the situation by pulling dowli
the petitions for local option in pre
cinct Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5; and at the
same time, the common interest will
be served by the withdrawal of the
petitions designed to "open up" pre
cincts Nos 6 and 7, this to be urged
by all parties at interest
. The terms of the new agreement
formulated by the saloonmen, and
upon which they propose to stand, I
have not yet been given out, as there
were a number of men in that busi
ness yet to be seen in that relation;
but it will be made known tomorrow
and receive due publicity when ready
for it '
It is Said that a petition has been
variously signed asking the common
qouncil of this city to meet in special
session tomorrow night, for the ex
press purpose of considering and
passing an ordinance prescribing the
number of saloons to be permitted in
this city, and fixing the district to
which the embargo applies, for a
given length of time. The details are
not yet all agreed upon; but what
ever they may be, the proposition is
in direct interest of the city and all
factional elements now contending
for popular expression. And it is
certain the saloonmen and the local
optionists will both benefit by the
plans afoot to hedge against an ex
pansion of the business.
W. E. Schimpff stated, at this office,
last night,, that he had been direct
communication with the State Brew
ers' Association at Portland, and was
qualified to make the declaration, as
coming from that particular body that
the Astoria saloonman who breaks
the Sunday closing law will be denied
the right to purchase beer from the
allied members of that association;
and further, that the Washington as
sociation of beer men would stand
pat on the1 steps that may be taken by
the Oregon factors.

With The Injured-
Word reached here yesterday af
ternoon that the sufferesrs from the
late unfortunate disaster on the jetty-
trestle, were all improving steadily,
and that Anders Hansen, who bore
the worst of the hurts, while having
been in dubious shape for several days
past, was, at the time the message
was sent, getting along finely and no
more uneasiness was felt about him.

STAMPEDE OF CHILDREN.
CHICAGO, April 25. Twelve hun
dred pupils of the Edward Jenner
Public School fled panic stricken to
the streets yesterday when a report
spread through the building that three
members of the "Black Hand Society"
had placed a nitro glycerine bomb in
the basement which, was timed to go
off at two o'clock! Although 12
teachers in the 25 rooms made every
effort to form fire drill lines and to
quiet the frantic children they rushed
pell mell down the three flights of
stairs trampling over one another in
their frenzy to get out of the school
house. Several of the smaller child
ren narrowly escaped serious injury
in the rush for the doors leading to
the streets.
Parents who hurried to the school
house to rescue their children from
the buildings added to the confusion.
It was only through the efforts of the
teachers and the bravery of engineer
Frank Smith and, Janitor Leonard
Moore, who stood at the main en
trance of the building picking up
those who were knocked down in the
rush for exits that no one was injured
fatally in the panic. -
Four hours after" the building had
been cleared of the boys and girls
frightened parents crowded the
streets around the structure awaiting
for news concerning the explosion
and threatening vengence on the
Black Hand Society. Not until as
squads of police arrived in response to
a call of Principal Lane was the
crowd dispersed,

Reducing the Waist Line in Both

Men and women with heavy, pen

them quickly and safely are usually
advised to go in for certain tiresome
twisting and bending exercises that,
as a matter of fact, they should care
fully avoid as being dangerous rather
than beneficial.
A far better plan is to use the fol
lowing three simple household reme
dies which can be obtained of any
druggist at small cost, viz.: 1 oz. Mar
mola, 1 oz. Fluid Extract Cascara
Aromatic, and 31 ozs. Syrup Simplex.
These are mixed together at home and
taken a teaspoonful after meals and
at bedtime.
These three make a mixture that is
not only perfectly harmless, but ac
tually quite beneficial to the system,
regulating the digestion, purifying the
blood, and clearing the complexion of
pimples and blotches. Its chief and
surprising benefit is in the- rapid,
natural manner in which it reduces
the fat person to the normal, beauti
ful lines of a fine physique, it having
been known to cause the reabsorption
of as much as a pound of fat a day.
Moreover, it does it symmetrically, $o
that no wrinkles or flabby skin arc
left behind. Strange to say neither
dieting nor exercise are advised when
this simple home recipe is being used,
for it will produce results independ
ently of either and so the patient is
instructed to eat whatever he or she
fancies and is also permitted to take
things easy.
