The Nehalem tug Geo. R. Vosburg,

her; and she will have on board her

he is taking out several practical men
with him to this trip. The company
is building an immense barge, 135
feet long, 26 feet beam, and 8 feet
hold, with which to barge the lum
ber out of the Nehalem; and the
scow in question will carry over 350,

the assembly of the fleet. She was

at 4:30 o'clock.
The steamship Roanoke was the

Superintendent J. H. Ackcrman in
responding to the toast "The High
School Situation in Oregon," among
other things said that education in
spiratton and improvement of neccs
sity comes from above. The char
acter of the high schools of a state is
determined directly by the strength of
the support that is given its State
University. In giving into any State
the condition of the high schools could
be told by visiting the State Univer
sity. Likewise, the quality of the
work of the 6th, 7th and 8th grades
can be determined from observing the
high schools. A school system is al
ways improved through influence
from above, . The opponents of the
appropriation for the State Univer
sity are wholly mistaken in assum
ing that Oregon's public school can
be improved without strengthening
the State University.

INFORMAL MEETING
OF DEMOCRATS
COUNCIL CHAMBER IN THE
CITY HALL WELL FILLED BY
DEMOCRATS -DR. HENDER
SON ELECTED CHAIRMAN.
An informal meting of the Demo
crats was held last evening in the
council chamber to consider and dis
cuss the feasability of putting a ticket
in the field for the June election. Mr.
J. T. Wallace called the meeting to
order and stated the reason for it
and invited nominations for ajcrma-
ncnt chairman, vx. Henderson was
placed in nomination and upon the
motion that nominations be closed
the doctor was elected. Mr. A. D.
Garner was elected secretary.
In order to secure the expressions
of those present it was moved by
Judge Trenchard and seconded, that a
Democratic ticket be placed m the
field. The remarks incident to the
motion occupied the best part of, an
hour and a half during which time
many good features were touched up
on by the various speakers. Mr. Isaac
Bergman favored placing in the field
a purely Democratic ticket while Dr.
Barr strongly advocated a Citizen's
ticket, on the plea that as there were
only 2SS registered as Democrats in
the county the probability of electing
a candidate would be lessened if he
represented the Democracy alone.
Mr. Kelly made an eloquent appeal
for the pople present to stand as a
unit for Democracy and the principles
it stood for. The original motion be
ing finally brought up for action it
was unanimously voted to place a
Democratic ticket in the field. A mo
tion was made and carried to adjourn
until next Wednesday evening at a
place to be decided upon by the fol
lowing committee of three: Messrs.
Tsaac Bergman, J. T. Wallace and R.
M, Woodin. This was followed by a
motion to notify all registered Demo
cratscither by mail or the press of
the time and place of the Wednesday
evening meeting. Adjourned 9:45.
