It is said the Rev.,L. D. Mahone,
once a well known divine ami doing
duty in this city, is a successful nomi
nee for the lower house of the Ore
gon legislature, on the Multnomah
ticket. He always manifested a lively
interest in political matters during his
sojourn in this city, and was some
thing of a scrapper in that field, des
pite his gcntlcer calling.
Badly Burned
George C. Layzcll of 36 West
Duane street met with a serious acci
dent ycitcrday morning, -while light
ing a fire at the cold storage plant of
, Schmidt. As he applied the match
a sheet of flame burst out and severe
ly burned him on both hands and
face. It is thought someone tam
pered with the valves Sunday and" al
lowed some oil to escape from which
a gas generated. Dr. Henderson
dressed the burns and says while very
painful they arc not deep and he docs
not anticipate any serious results.
In the Police Court '
The drag net of the police for the
48 hours between the session of the
court Saturday and yesterday was
more productive of victims than the
catch of some of the river fishermen.
John Barleycorn was responsible for
the plight of six of them and the
customary $5 or two days was the
sentenceVf the two present and for
feiture Of $5 bail was recorded against
the other four. The last one was
charged with vagrancy and upon his
promising to leave town the sentence

Local Option Petitions
For the past month or two there
have been regular meetings held in
this city by a group of 50 of 60 well
known citizens, banded , in what is
known as the Astoria Civic Improve
ment League, of which body, William
Ross is the president, and Mr. Whit
ney, secretary. This organization has
launched the movement to submit the
question of local to the 'people of
wards 2,3, 4 and 5, at the polls on June
1st Rev. C. C Rarick, pastor of the
First Methodist church, and Rev. W.
S. Gilbert, of the First Presbyterian
church, were in charge of two of the
petitions yesterday, but it could not
be learned who had the others. At
all events they were in circulation,
and from the reports at hand, were
very successful; it requiring but ten
per cent of the registered vote of the
wa"rds to perfect the petition. In an
interview with Mr. Rarick last even
ing that gentleman said, the move
ment was based upon the refusal of
the saloon men to obey the Sunday
threat alleged to have been made by
the Weinhard Estate people that
"they would see to it that wards 6
and 7, (now dry go. wet in due time"
or words to that effect. At all events,
the movement is afoot and will likely
reach the final tribunal on the first
Monday in June next.
