The Fleet Will Weigh Anchor
This Morning
GOING TO LOS ANGELES
At Midnight a Farewell Salute of 13
Aerial Bombs, Fired From Point

of 13 Giant Rockets.
SAN DIEGO, Cal., April 17.-The
stay of the American Battleship fleet
in San Diego waters is rapidly draw
ing to a close and the sixteen ships
under command of Admiral Chas M.
Thomas, will hoist anchor at 6 a. m.
tomorrow and steam to the north
ward, their next visiting place, being
the port of Los Angeles, four of these
ports are included in the calling list,
a division of four ships being sent to
each place.
Another large section of liberty
men came ashore from the fleet this
morning and the day has practically
been given, over to their entertain
1 ment. There were matinees in all
the theaters except one' this afternoon,
the only card being the uniform of
the enlisted men. The blue jackets
packed most of the amusement places
During the evening they roamed
about the streets enjoying themselves
to the fullest extent. Shooting gal
leries were a favorite stopping place
and more target records were broken.
Restaurants of the better class were
throntred at the luncheon hours
Sailormen of the modern navy enjoy
splendid fare on board ship and Seek
equally good food ashore. Every
sailor on the streets wore a souvernir
of some sort, usually buttons with
streamers of red, white and blue com
memorative of the visit of the 'fleet.
A junior officers' ball at Hotel Del
Comado tonight and a band concert
in the city will wind up the round of
gaiety marking the four days of the
fleet's visit. At midnight a farewell
salute of 13 aerial bombs fired off Pt.
Loma will be followed by the flight
of 13 giant rockets and 13 red fire
illuminations.
Rouses Railroads in Defense of Ex
tension Supplied by the Elkins Law
Earlier Date is Not Yet Pos
sible.
WASHINGTON, April 17.-Front
the bill introduced in the Senate to
day by Burkctt, it is indicated that
the resolutions offered by Senator
Elkins, to extend the application of
the commodities clause in the railroad
rate bill, to January 1, 1910, may be
opposed when it comes up for pas
sae. Burkett's bill proposes t
change this extension to January
next. The railroads have represented
that it will be impossible for them to
divorce themselves from the owner
ship of the mines, the output of which
they carry to May 1 next; and there
fore the Elkins resolution, giving
them two years additional, was of
fered.
NOT EXPLAINED,
SHORT WEEK ON CHANGE.
NEW YORK, April 17.-The short
week in the stock market was char
acterized by languid and insignificant
trading. Money continued to ac-
cummulate in New York with a
diminishing demand from borrowers
and with the expected demand from
railroad corporations in abeyance.
The money market became so 'ple
thoric that shipments of gold to Paris
began on the triangular operation
through London. Concessions offered
bv the Imperial Bank of Germany
pointed to4 some outgo to Berlin as
well. Neither the gold nor the prom
ise of an early recall of government
deposits from the banks had any ef
fect in stiffening money rates. Brade
streets reports pointed to some new
reported pointed to some renewed
contraction, copper prices declined
again and iron and steel prices were
unstable. A fresh increase in the
number of idle freight cars pointed
to disappointing conditions of rail
road tariff.
COUNTERFEITERS.
SACRAMENTO, April 17.-Evi.
deuces of the bogus coin- artists.
working in this city was disclosed
yesterday when a family moving into
a flat on 16th street, found pieces of
glass on which were perfect impres
sions of $5 pieces. Scattered all
through the flat were tell tale evi
dences of tthe boeus coin artists.
Quantities of plaster of paris which
had been used as molds, bits of waste
and unused metal were littered about
the floors.
Two men who recently vacated the
house are supposed to have been the
criminals as their, actions while there
were suspicious in the extreme. It is
thought the men did not float any of
the coin in this city but carried it
with them to other fields.

DRESS SUIT MUSICIANS.
CHICAGO, April 17 Members of
the Chicago Federation of Musicians
insist it is worth $2 a week more than
the regular scale of wages to wear
a dress suit. A demand based upon
this theory as embodied in resolutions
adopted yesterday by organization
and will be presented to the Chicago
Theater Managers Association. Both
"first" and "second"- class houses are
' included in the demand. The first
class scale is $20 for eight perform
ances and the second class is ?ie
: It is worth $2 more to appear in dress
nerformance" said
President Winkler of the Federation
Laundry bills are high and there is
"great wear and tear on the suite.

In Colorado. .
DENVER. April 17.-The United
States department of justice revcrs
ing its policy, announced sonic time
ago, will resume investigation of
frauds in Colorado and other west
ern states and another force of special
agents has been detailed from Wash
ington to begin immediate work in
Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. They
arc to make their headquarters in
Denver. It has been understood that
there would be nc further proceedings
in Colorado until after the supreme
court had passed upon the appeal
from the recent decisions of Judge
Lewis, quashing the indictments that
had been returned against the alleged
"land grabbers." These appeals are
not. to be argued until October 13 and
no explanation has yet been given for
the change in policy of the adminis
tration in resuming the investigations
before that time. A federal judge has
been summoned for the May terms.
SUITS AGAINST C. H. VENNER.
CHICAGO. April If lit an an
swer filed by the Chicago City Rail
way Co., yesterday to the suits
brought by Clarence II. Venner, the
New York banker, is referred to as
a " sandbagger" who bought stock
for the purpose "of holding up the
corporation.
Venner has asked the supreme
court to set aside the ordinance of
Feb. 11. 1907, and to order the np-
nointment of a receiver for the com

of tthe corporation's books. The an
swer is signed by Cole E. R. Bliss

CHICAGO, April 17. All previous
records for the mile on roller skates
were broken last night when Wm.
Robinson. American amateur champ
ion, did thedistance in 2:24, which is
three seconds faster than Ollie
Moor's professionsal record of 2:27.
The race in which Robinson set the
new mark was in the final heat of a
handicap affair in which he started
from scratch. Robinson passed the
entire field before five of the eight
laps had been rolled off.

dence that some unidentified vessel,
apparently a large sailing ship, has
