Just a Suggestion-
It is not known just what the law
in the case may be, nor how far those
in command of the tftuation may be
able to go, but it ha been tuggested
bv some excellent citizens, that Cap
tain Werlich, now in command of the
lighthouse district for which Astoria
is the home harbor of the fleet of
tender employed for it, might be pre
vailed upon to give the citizen of
this nort a chance to go outside on
the steamers that are here and avail
able when the Armada passe north
by the Columbia bar next month; and
it would not be amiss to try it out.

Yesterday was one at (tie uuii days
on the waterfront, most of the popu

reached the city that the well known

ple. The British ship Castle Rock,
205 day out from Sydney, Australia,
with coal for this port, ha been post
ed a "missing" by Lloyds; and it i
safe to say, she will, figure for all
time, among the dread mysteries of
the deep. The German bark Nomia
went up to Portland yesterday on the
hawser of the Harvest Queen, after j
she had dropped the French bark
Ernest Legouve, Captain Candcl, in
the stream, here, ready for sea ana
Europe with a cargo of grain. Th-!
Geo. W. Elder was among the lucky
ones to cet over the bar outward-
bound yesterday, having come down
rom Portland with good business
or California. The steamer Homer
came in from the Bay City yester-
l.iv. and went on to the metopolis.
The steamer Westerner crossed in
from San Francisco, and went to the
Tongue Point mill dock to load out
ward.

The very sad intelligence of the
sudden death, at Kent, Wash., of
Norman L. Smith, was received at
the home of Mrs. Jennie Busey, in
this city, last evening. The telegram
gave no particulars, but the reason
able surmise is indulged that Mr
Smith was a victim of a re-action from
a recent and serious case of la grippe.
He had been -ailing with this malady

Pre-Easter Storms
The three days prior to Easter Sun
day are to be marked by storm, if
the two-day stretch that began on
Thursday holds out until midnight
tonight, and by every rule of habit
and devoted longing, tomorrow should
break clear and bright as befits an
Easter morning at Astoria. Rain
on Easter pre-supposes seven conse
cutive Sundays of rain; besides re
tarding the cherished' display of many
an exquisite piece of millinery, not
to mention new and seasonable
gowns, etc., etc.

Mr. Smith was thoroughly and hap
pily known in this city and his death
will come as a shock to his multitude
of friends, as it has to those who
were nearer and dearer, to whom &
wealth of sympathy will go out in the
sad crisis. It is a year since deatn
robbed Mr. Smith of his devoted wife,
who was Miss Jennie Busey, of thi

bright young sons, now orphaned in

A Sale Slips for Piano Numbers.
Messrs. Norris Staples and Lew
Ogan have returned from Portland
where they went to have a scientific
test of the crushing strength ot the
brick which have been manufactured
by him by a hand process out of the
Clatsop clays during the past several
weeks.
The strongest brick tested was one
of the red samples and it ;ook a
weight of 3S00 pounds to the square
inch to break it.
The second strongest brick was one
of the buffs and it took approximately
2300 pounds to the square inch , to
crush it. .
These tests were made in the office
of Col. Roessler, United States engi
neer. These reports show although
the brick tested was made by a hand
process, that they stand a higher test
than any ever made in this state by
the best of machine processes.
Messrs. Staples and Ogan have the
assurance of the proprietor, the ar
chitect and the contractor of the new
Weinhard-Astoria Hotel that Astoria
made brick will be given preference
and if the brick can be produced as
