No Marketable Catch
If, as the old saying has it, a bad
k.:niff mhtcea for a Rood ending".
the local salmon fishing season should
handsomely in August,
for there was no marketable catch in
these waters for the 30 hours end
ing at sundown last evening. The
boats, (such of them as returned anu
at ain had nothing to show
in a marketable way last night, and
a prominent canneryman. yesterday
confirmed the general absence of fish
at the delivery points in which he is
interested; so the business is an
ahead of the 2000 boats now out, with
more to follow day by day.

Range Lights on the Bar
Captain P. J. Werlich, superintend
ent of, the lighthouse department, is
at the mouth f the river engaged in
preliminary work for the establish
ment of .range lights across the Co
lumbia River bar. It is the first timj
that the Government has ever' made
an attempt to put in such aids at that
point. Heretofore the navigators
have been iruided largely by the posi
tinn of the buovs. One of the most
important lights will be established
t Saml Island. The innovation is ex
pected to be of the inestimable help
to mariners.
