Astorian is to have a new industry
at once that bids fair to place her
among the foremost manufacturing
cities of the Northwest a modern
high class clay product plant which
will be in time equal if not superior to
any enterprise of its kind on the
coast.
The general reader perhaps, may be
a little skeptical as to the claims
made by the promoters of this enter
prise for you have not yet had the
opportunity to see the results of the
test work that has been made under
the auspices of the Chamber of Com
merce. Those who are interested in
this matter are kimjly urged to be
present at the meeting of the Cham
ber of Commerce tomorrow night.
At this meeting will be exhibited
various clay products made from your
own clays as follows: Drain tile,
possessing unique qualities, not only
for drain tile but for a type of clays
used in the manufacture of unglazed
earthenware flower ppfsand kindred
clay products.
Brick of all kinds including face
brick, paving brick and common
builders will be exhibited and other
various characteristics discussed from,
a scientific and commercial stand
point.

prise. With such an array of basic
colors as pure whites, reds, blacks,
buffs, the blending for desired shades
can be assured. -
Such practical matters as colors,
hardness, reproduction and the prob
able cost of the various finished
products to the market will be taken
up in detail at the meeting Monday
night. Suffice to say for the present,
however, that the probable cost of
brick to the market will be very rea
sonable f,or all common builders,
but the established market price will
doubtless govern the price of No. 1
face brick. These cost matters arc
usually left to the determination of
the management of the industry.
The sewer pipe type of clays will
represent also what can be done in
the fire-proofing, roofing tile and terra
cotta lumber branch of the clay
product business.
Terra cotta products can be manu
factured from clays located in As
toria in combination with other clays
found in the immediate vicinity of
the city. These clays have excellent
working qualities, burn with slow fire
shrinkage and are suitable to mould
and shape into thin walls that will
mature, or vitrify at comparatively
low heats. This is an item of much
importance to stockholders as it
would.be a great saving of fuel and
furthermore, reduce the cost of pro
duction in other respects to a
minimum.
No announcement of recent years
could rival in importance to this city
the possibilities of an up-to-date clay
product industry, equal to the iron
and steel industries.
Bank balances will increase and
there will be anladded amount of
money along all lines. The Chamber
of Commerce is to be congratulated
for its efforts to establish this genuine
home industry. This city has been
for the last 25 years trying to get a

that you have the material in abund
ance. It is now up to the interested
citizens, if they desire this industry
here, to further encourage the project
to a successful termination by their
financial support.
Capital has been offered from out
siders but if they get control of the
industry its location might be a1 ser
ious proposition to the welfare of the
city of Astoria. It is presumed that
Astorians want the industry and its
monthly payroll. Now is the time for
action and to get in on the ground
floor, as you will receive first con
sideration at all times. Hence, it cvi
denty is advisable for the home peo
ple to take the lead in this assured
enterprise.
It should be the policy of the com
pany to stick close to manufacturing
lines and other mercantile interests
supply the various wants of its em
ployees. Live and let live should be
the motto. Patronize first thos
who patronize the entirprise, in "hon
or preferring one another." You will
not be slighted but given a fair show
to go in with your eyes open.
You will not be asked for much

daily capacity of from 14,000" to 15
000 brick. You will be asked to sub
scribe for stock at $100 per share to
be paid in full when the proper
amount is fully subscribed. No stock
gambling scheme, but straightforward
square dealing on honest business
principle is what is wanted to build a
plan tright to run right
Incorporation under the laws of
the State for the above amount will
afely start the enterprise. Articles
of incorporation can provide for an
extension of the plant when ncces
sary without further legal proceed
nigs. When stock is subscribed to
warrant going ahead, directors will
be chosen by the stockholders who
will, manage the enterprise. The ele
ment of non-productive capital and
idle equipment will at all times be
avoided as much as possible.
In this connection those who wish
to further investigate as to the stand
ing and' character of the party doing
the test work and promoting the en
terprise will find on file with the man
ager of the Chamber of Commerce,
J. II. Whyte, a dozen recommenda
tions which you are invited to look
into.
Some are from bankers, large busi
ness houses, professors of colleges,
preachers, editors, attorneys at law,
brick factories, and note in particular
the one from the general manager of
the street railways of Oakland, Cal.
These recommendations are from
parties in the East and in the West.
Note also the further qualifications of
a college degree of bachelor of
science which speak for itself.
To build a plant to manufacture
both face building and paving brick,
would require more capital than the
above mentioned sum. It would
mean the manufacture of brick by
both the dry-press and stiff mud
process. The latter process however,
requires an extensive and expansive
system of drying the products of the
waste heat plan from hot kilns.
But when the dry-press process is
once installed and operated suc
cessfully circumstances will doubtless
warrant in a short time the extension
of the plant to not only include pav
ing brick but terra cotta, drain tile
and other clay products as orna
ments, flower pots, etc.

At Greenwood Tomorrow-
All that was mortal of the late
Edward H. Utzinger arrived in this,
his home city on yesterday's noon ex
press from Portland. The remains
were accompanied by Miss Marie
Utzinger and Albert Utzinger, the
brother and sister of the lamented
oung Astorian. The casket was met
t the train by the family and a group
f devoted friends and escorted to the
home now bereft. The funeral will
transpire tomorrow, Monday, at 1
'clock, at Grace Epsicopal Church,
nd interment will be, had at Green
wood; the pallbearers being Messrs.
