Ready for Sea Oother Marine Notes
The steamship Aker returned down
from Portland yesterday morning,
with part of a cargo of lumber, and
left out at 1 in the afternoon, for Ev
erett, where she will complete her
load and depart for Hakodadi, Japan.
The steamer Eureka arrived down
yesterday, after quick despatch from
Portland on her new run down the
coast and went to sea immediately,
on her way to Coos Bay and Eureka.
The steamship Senator made a
midnight get-away from the O. R.
& N. piers here yesterday morning,
with plenty of business and went over
the bar long before dawn; but that
was nothing for Captain Nopander,
who knows that barrier as well as he
does his chart-house. The Senator
took away her record cargo out of
this port, an even 2,000tons.
The oil steamer Santa Rita crossed
in yesterday afternoon and went on
to the metropolis after a brief stay
in this city.
The steamer Nome City entered
port yesterday evening for the first
time in many weeks, from San Fran
cisco, and went on to Portland for
more lumber.
The British bark 'Calluna, Captain
Barham, came down the river yes
terday on the hawsers of the Okla
hama, and will take the earliest pos
sible despatch for Quecnstown or
Falmouth, for orders. She will pro
bably get away today.
The French bark Hoche, Captain
Ramet, arrived down from the me
tropolis yesterday on the tow lines
of the Harvest Queen, wheat laden
for Europe, and will go over the bar
on the first available hawser.
The American ship Berlin is near-
lv fitted out for Nushagak, and will
depart from Portland on Wednesday
morning next on her way north, bhe
takes out 128 Japanese in service of
Warren Packing Co.
The steamer R. Miler has returned
from Portland all fixed up inside and
out and is in prime condition. She
went on the Deep River run in place
of the Julia B., yesterday, for a few
days. It is not known where she will
be assigned by Captain Babbidge
afterward.

INCREASE OF CRIME.
NEW YORK, April 4. An in
crease in the city's crime is indicated
by the quarterly report of the Detec
tive bureau. The report shows that
more crimes were committed in that
period than in the first three months
of last year. As an offset, however,
it is shown that there are many more
convictions for felonies and misde
meanors and a larger amount of stol
en property was recovered. Com
missioner Bingham was pleased by
the report concerning the police dogs
attached to the Parkville Mation,
Brooklyn. Since the dogs have been
natrollinz the parkville territory
burglaries there have fallen from ten
to two a month.
