the Star Theatre was filled by an;
audience gathered to witness the op
ening production of the best play
yet offered by the Donald-Bell Co.,

excellent one, every member of the
company appearing at his and her
best. The special scenery and stage
settings were of the highest order,
and for three acts the audience
thoroughly enjoyed the fine pres
entation. In the last scene, of the
third act, the strongest in the play,
Miss Tucker as "Quccna" held the
audience spell-bound for fifteen min
utes in as powerful a piece of acting
as could be witnessed. In this act
"Quecna" becomes hysterical and
finally goes mad, and when the cur
tain fell with Miss Tucker prostrate
upon the stage, the 'entire audience
joined in a "curtain call" when the
curtain arose the lady was seen sup
ported by Messis Donald and Butler,
swaying as if to fall. The audience
was not fully aware of the real facts
until the orchestra had played a
third overture ,and the curtain arose
on a very pretty stage setting, pre
pared for the last act. Mr. Bell ap
peared and announced that it would
be impossible to finish the play as
Miss Tucker had completely collaps
ed, and all efforts to revive her were
of no avail. He announced that
tickets would be passed out at the
door for tonight's performance and
the audience filed out regretting the
sad ending of a grand performance.
Physicians were hurriedly called and
at a late hour Miss Tucker was some
what quieted and will no doubt be
able to appear tonight. The cause
of the collapse is assigned to the
strain of continued rehearsals, and
the strong effort necessary to pro
perly sustain the character.

popuar interest has developed in the
exhibition of the works of the late
Augustus Saint Gaudens, now being
held at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art that the projectors have decided
to keep it open for another month.
The exhibition contains plaster casts
of the most famous of the sculptor's
works, as well as a number of originals.

DECORATED BY EMPEROR.
NEW YORK, Mar. 30.-Through
a cablegram sent by the Superintend
ent of the Royal Opera at Berlin,
Miss Geraldine Farrer, the soprano,
has been informed that Emperor
William had decorated her as Kan
morsangerin (court singer) as a re
ward for her singing in the Prussian
capital. Miss Farrar will receve the
decoration itself when she arrives in
Berln in June. When she concludes
her engagement with the Metropol
itan Company she will go to Paris to
appear at the Opera , Comique and
thence to Berlin where she will sing
"Madame Butterfly" and other operas
of her rcportoire at the Royal Opera.

Chester Gillette Electrocuted in Au
burn Prison.
AUBURN, N. Y., Mar. 30.-Chester
Gillette was successfully electrocuted
in Auburn prison this morning at
6:18. It was the most successful
electrocution ever had in Auburn
prison. One contact of 1,800 volts
at 7 1-2 amperes was all that was
necessary to kill. This was turned
on at 6:14:03 and off at 6:15:06 and
the man was declared dead by Ward
ne Bonham at 6:18.

AUTO MILK WAGONS.
CHICAGO, Mar. 30 Automobiles
may be pressed into service as strike
breakers in the event of a walkout
of the milk wagon drivers of Chicago.
Milk dealers yesterday began prepar
ations to utilize machines for deliv
ering milk during a possible tie-up
of their wagon delivery.
This announcement is expected $o
be reassuring to mothers of infants
and to invalids requiring a certified
lacteal diet. Should a strike occur
automobiles will be limited to the
delivery of certified milk at first.
Later on, should the plan prove a
success, delivery cars will be put on
the regular routes all over the city.
GRAND PACIFIC LEASED.
CHICAGO, Mar. 30.-The Grand
Pacific Hotel today passes into the
hands of new lessees, a stock com
pany of Chicago capitalists, with
Wm. H. Harper as president
The transfer of the lease from the
Anheuser Busch interests of St. Louis
to the Harper interests was made
Saturday and the latter assumes full
control of the property today for ten
years, at a reported annual rental of
$93,500.

NEW YORK, Mar. 30.-Among
