AUDUBON SOCIETY
Dying Birds to Be Defended
Throughout the Land.
LAST STAND FOR GAME BIRDS
From January First on to a Reason
able Open Season in the Fall is
the Period in Which Protection ia
to be Asked for Mating Birds.
NEW YORK, Mar. 19. Until all
mating birds of spring may fly from
their winter homes to the north to
rear their young, safe from the pot
shots of unsportmanlike and market
hunters, a national campaign against
spring shooting will be carried from
state to state, it was announced here
to-day. Acting on the protests of
sportsmen and the warning of the
Department of Agriculture, the Na
tional Association of Audubon So
cieties has undertaken to make a last
stand for the existence of the dying
races of American game birds in
every state in which shooting during
the breeding season is not forbidden
by law. In Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, New Jersey and Oklahoma a
determined fight is to-day being car
ried against the commercial interests
which are organized to fight the
movement
That the most desperate measures
have been taken by the men who
butcher birds for the market to pre
vent protective legislation in these
states as well as the twenty others in
which the law still leaves the game
birds easy prey while breeding, is
known to-day. Although this market
lobby has always been active in op
posing laws which- threatened to cur
tail their gains in any particular state,
the possibility of such a general pro
tection throughout the country has
aroused them to finance a wide
spread and unscrupulous fight To
pit against this rich and selfish inter
est, the Audubon workers have sim
ply the moral support of sportsmen
and the general unselfish desire of the
people to save the game birds from
extinctioa
From January first on to a reason
able open season in the fall is the
period in which protection is to be
asked for the mating birds and their
young. In fifteen states and nine
Canadian provinces the game birds
are already shielded by law during
this crucial time. Unless such meas
ures are taken at once by the remain
ing states the government authorities
have agreed that game shooting in
this country will soon cease to exist
and every species become extinct.
On the legislatures in the Dakotas,
Whyoming, Iowa, Nebraska, New
Mexico, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsyl
vania, Texas, Missiouri, Kansas, Ar
kansas and all the southern states
will depend the life or death of
Ameican game when this matter is
brought before them this year or
next. In each of these states all the
money and influence of the commer
cial bird killers, is already at work for
their short-sighted policy of exter
minating slaughter for to-morrow's
table.
"Every real true sportsman is be
hind us in the fight for the dying
game birds of this country"; said Wil
liam Dutcher, president of the assoc
iation at its headquarters, 141 Broad
way. to-day. "We will make our
stand for these game species just as
faithfully as we have worked for the
protection of the non-game birds. H
every patriotic citiien will take his
place with us to defend the birds
against rapid extinction, we shall be
eouiiied to oppose all the selfish in
terest that money can buy and the
gruesome story of the wild pigeon,
the heath hen, the Eskimo curlew
and the Carolina paroquet species,
exterminated by the wasteful greed
of man, will not be repeated."

SENSATIONAL THREATS
CHICAGO, Mar. 19. It became
known yesterday that sensational let
ters threatening a novel and hideous
form af assassination have been re
ceived lately by Mayor Busse, Chief
of Police Shippy and Assistant Chief
Schuettler. The letters inclosed a
doxen or more small steel points.
Thev were smooth, bright and sharp
The letter to the mayor was written
in a good .regular hand and couched
in grammatical, if terrible, terms.
The writer said he was one of a
number of persons banded together
to kill the mayor and other officials
A revolver, he said, had been con
structed to shoot cartridges compos
ed of steel points, samples of which
were inclosed. The shooting would
be noiseless, and the steel points, the
writer says, were steeped in deadly
poison. By means of this gun a
dozen of fatal poison could be shot
in the system of the intended victim
and death would ensue at once.

OLD BELLS MADE NEW.
The Only Way to Restore i Cracked
Bell is to Re-cast It
Every once in a while some one
somewhere wants to know how to
restore the tone of cracked bells. It
is not usually a question of economy
either, but often one of affection, for
each bell has an individuality of tone
that no substitute can replace to those
who have heard it as a familiar voice
through many years. Discussing this
subject in its April number Popular
Mechanics magazine states:
"Every attempt so far made to re
store he tone of cracked bells has
proved unsuccessful In many in
stances the cracks have been filed
and sawed out and hot bell metal has
been poured in, but the results have
been the same. Bell metal is an alloy
composed of 75 per cent copper and
25 per cent tin.
" 'The only way the tone of a
cracked bell can be restored is by
recasting it,' says the manager of the
McShane Bell Company. 'There
have been any number of experiments
made by those claiming to restore the
tone in various ways, but these ex
periments have never been success
ful.' "
"The same assertion is made by
Chester Mencely, of the Mcneely
Bell Company, who says that the hot
bell metal will not fuse properly and
the cracks appear after a few blows
have been struck with the hammer."
CHICAGO RESIDENT RELATES
MOST GREWSOME EXPERIENCE
During L. T. Cooper's recent visit
to Chicago, where his new prepara
tion and theory created the usual sen
sation, many hundreds of people
brought enormous internal parasites
to the young man, which had left the
system after taking his medicine.
Among these people was Mr. Emil
Winkler, who brought to Cooper a
tapeworm that proved to be over 90
feet in length. Mr. Winkler, who
resides at 182 East Ohio street, Chi
cago, had this to say of his exper
ience: "For five years I have been
more or less complaining. I have had
severe headaches, and any food that
I would eat would nauseate me. I
would have bad dreams almost'every
night; dizzy spells would compel me
to quit work. Black spots would ap
pear before my eyes when stooping
ove rand rising quickly. I would feel
tired most of the time; in fact, I
had no life in me to speak of for the
last five years. I tried various treat
ments, and one physician in St. Louis
was recommended to me, and I was
under his treatment some time, but
as usual I obtained no relief.
"So many people asked me to try
Cooper's preparation that I decided
to do so, and after using it for a
few days, this awful thing passed from
my system. I feel much better al
ready, and I want to gay right here
that I thank Mr. Cooper a hundred
times for what his medicine has done
for me. I would not tae $5000 and
have that thing back in my system
again."
Mr. Winkler is a fair sample of the
experience of many during Cooper's
stay in Chicago, and this no doubt
helped to account for the enormous
sale of the Cooper preparation in this
city and others, recently visited by
the young man.
We sell and will be pleased to
explain the Cooper preparations.
