A requisition to purchase fire
alarm boxes brought up quite a dis
cussion. The minority wanted the
city to purchase eight and the ma
jority reported for only five boxes.
The majority report was adopted.
The application of a building per
mit to J, B. Silver was granted. '
The superintendent bf streets was
instructed to notify Isaac Bergman to
remove the obstruction on Ninth
street within two weeks. Nullifying
the 36-hour order given some time
ago. Failure to comply with this
notification will be a matter for the
police court

Providing for time and 'manners of
improving Twenty-third street from
the north line of Commercial street
to north line of Exchange. Passed.
Appropriation from the special fund
constituted for the purpose of defray
ing the costs and expenses of improv
ing Exchange street for the benefit of
Palmberg & Heblach the sunt of
$996. Was read first and second
times.
Appropriating out of special fund
for improving Irving avenue for the
benefit of W. A. Goodin. Was read
first and second time.
Amending section 7 of ordinance
No. 1857 entitled an ordinance provid
ing for taxing, licensing and regulat
ing bar rooms, drinking shops and
places where liquors are sold within
the city of Astoria. Read first and
second time.
It provides that all saloons must
close at 1 o'clock a. m. and remain
closed until 5 o'clock. The ordinance
will further provide that any person
convicted of violating any of the
provisions of the measure shall be
subject to a fine of from $25 to $100
or imprisonment from 12 to 50 days,
and shall forfeit his liquor license.
To improve Twelfth street from
south line of Commercial street to
south line of Duane. Laid over till
next meeting.
Confirming special assessment roll

third readig and passed.
To establish the grade on Thirty

Appropriating out of the special
fund the sum of $1291.72 for the
benefit of W. A. Goodin, Irving from
Eighteenth to east line of Shively's.

Poviding time and manner of im
proving Seventh street from Grand to
Harrison avenue. Passed.
Appropriating out of the general
fund the sum of $287.50 for the bene
fit of the Gamewe)l fire alarm & Tele
graph Company. Passed.
Communication from the Scow Bay
Iron & Brass Works in regard to fire
engine. Referred to committee on
fire and water.
Communication from J. Jackson in
regarding to removing house from
off his premises. Referred to com
mittee on streets and public ways.

ciaiton in regard to increase of appro
priation the council was extended a
vote of thanks. The communication
was filed.
From Joseph Schamberger and 56
others in regard to animals running
at large, asking that the nuisance be
abated. Was referred to the commit
tee on health and police and to the
chief of police.
A resolution was passed that the
auditor be instructed to advise the
district attorney of the fifth judicial
district that his deputy in this city is
lax in enforcing the statutes.
The requisition for stamps for the
auditor's office was granted.
A proposition to donate a strip of
land near Grace Church to the city
was referred to the city attorney for
a written opinion, The reason for
this action was that the daontion
would interfere with a grading con
tract already let.
The meeting adjourned at 10 p. m.
