There were received 442 letters

W have received letter irom
Professor Ralph S. Tarr ot tne de

Cornell University of Ithaca, N.
statin that he is engaged in the re
vision of the Tarr-McMurry geogra
phies which are extensively used in
various parts of the country. He has
asked for such literature as oears

t,. hrn sent him. He nas aisu

cal of this locality and the same will
be sent hira in due course. A copy
ot the literature prepared for the
Seattle World's Fair book has been
also sent to Professor Tarr.
Professor John C. Pierson, Prin
cipal of the High School of Beloit
WisL. has asked for pictures of As
toria to be used as stereopticau slides
to illustrate a lecture he is delivering
on the West and this will be forward

We have also sent him a copy of
the literature for the Seattle World's

WANTS POTATO LAND.
-We have received a letter from Mr.
Thomas Warwick of Tekoa, Wash.,
levin to rent 50 acres suitable to
-----
potatoes in this locality and a any
make a business arrangement
with Mr. Warwick that will satisfy
him, it would probably result in more
irood to the community, as Mr. war
wick has long been in the business of
raising potatoes and would bring the
experience of an expert in his line.
OIL, GAS AND COAL.
I have been pushing as rapidly as I
could, considering the many other
thinirs I have to do, the leasing of the
land for the oil, gas and coal proposi
tion. The leases have all been prom
ised me and I have done all that could
be done to expedite the leasing and
it appears every day that the leases
will finally be closed. That has been
the status of this proposition for fully
a month. As it is necessary to get
the leases, of course the delay in this
matter holds the entire proposition
back. Meanwhile the books are open
for stock subscription and any one
rho wishes to subscribe for some
stock has the privilege of doing so by
calling at the office. As soon as the
ground is leased the machinery can
be ourchased I shall continue push
ing this matter along as rapidly as
possible and it is only a question oi
more time when there will be drilled
three 2500 feet deep holes in this
locality to test for oils, gas and coal
THE SEAWALL PROPOSITION.
While there has been more than
the. usual amount of talk about the
setting on foot of the seawall propo
sition, I wish to call attention at this
time to the substantial fact that
through the initiative of the progres
sive members of the City Council a
resolution has been put on record
civinir notification that an amend
ment to the charter would be offered
providing for the voting of bonds to
build this bulkhead.
This is one of the most difficult
propositions to get started but. it now
seems that with the assistance of the
Honorable Mayor and City Council
that the people of Astoria will have
an opportunity for voting on this
oroiect at an early date. We should
keep our minds single to the point in
view, that of building the seawall,
and there should be no jealousy as to
who should have the glory of the
accomolishment in case there should
be any glory, something yet to be
demonstrated. It will take the co
operation and good will of the ma
ioritv of the people to secure this
improvement and while I am confi
dent in mv own mind that the propo
sition if once placed before the people
will be favorably acted upon, yet
those who are in favor of it should
not raise any minor obstacles. ,.As to
the details of how the proposition is
to be worked out there will be an op
portunity in due course given for
every person to make his suggestion.
Dr. W. C. Logan is chairman of this
City Council committee and Dr. H. L.
Henderson is the secretary. Mr. A.
H. Smith is busily engaged in draw
ing up the necessary amendments to
the City charter.
