The New Street
The work of grading Irving avenue
from Eighteenth street, east, ii pro
gressing rapidly, the grade having
been practically completed a far east
as Thirtieth street, there' being only
a few more gulches to fill. When this
street is completed and paved, it will
certainly be a very desirable location
for a residence district, for the view
from any portion of its entire length
will be unsurpassed. The grade ex
tend along the side of the ridge and
the ground on the north side of the
street will generally be lower than
the street thus affording a good view
to dwcllinir that mav be built on
either side, and we predict that there
will be a great many dwellings built
on this new street in the very near
luture.

Repairs
Work was begun yesterday on the
repairing and rebuilding of the boiler
house and engine room of the North
Pacific Brewery which were recently
so badly damaged by fire. A force of
mechanics are now busy in overhaul
ing the engines and other machinery
and tearing out the burned portions
of the building which remain stand
ing. This fire proved that the use
of asbestos coverings on boiler is a
benefit in more way than one, for
there is ho doubt that the boilers at
the brewery were saved by the asbes-
tor covering. The heat was success
fully withstood and the only, thing
that affected the linings on the boil
ers was the immense amount of water
thrown on the fire. It will require
about one week to get the new smoke-
stocks in olace and the rebuilding of
the houses and repairing of the en
gine, etc, will probably consume
about four or five weeks after which
the brewery will be in full operation
again. ,
INTER-SCHOLASTIC
'-'DEBATE;
WELL 8USTA1NED ARGUMENTS
FROM BOTH TEAMS, FACTS,
FIGURES AND FANCIES FREE
LY FURNISHED LARGE AT-TENDANCE.
Anything the school children and
high school pupil are intereited in
interest the whole population and
this fact was proven last evening at
the Aitoria Theatre by the crowded
condition that prevailed. The occa
sion was the debate for the cham
pionship of the Columbia river dis
trict between the Clatskanie high
school team and the Astoria High
School team.
The former is composed of Miss
Ethel Barnes, Miss Leila Page and
Mastes Zenas Eastman and their
opponents the home team, is com
posed of Miss Birdie Wise, Mis
Jennie Jeffers and Master Carl
Thomas. The question" was:
"Resolved, That the Municipali
ties of the United States Should Own
and Operate Their Light and Trans
portation Facilities."
Hon. John H. Smith wa the
chairman and in his remark ex
plained the motive and conditions of
the debate Limiting each speaker to
12 minutes, he said there would be a
tap of the gavel when ten minutes
had ben used and at the expiration
of 12 minutes the gavel would be
sounded and the speaker must stop
even if in the middle of a sentence or
word. He closed hi remark by lay
ing that this much discussed question
was to be settled for good within the
next hour or two.
The High School Orchestra played
a long selection which was well ren
dered. Mrs. A. A. Finch's vocal selection
wa o well received that she wa
compelled to sing an encore.
Following the debate the High
School Orchestra played a selection
and the double quartet rendered a
song and was wildly cheered and re
sponded with an encore. Then all
attention was given to the decision
of the judge and the result of their
deliberations were delivered in sealed
envelopes and opened by Chairman
Smith in the presence of Miss Wise
and Master Eastman. The decision
was that Astorian-debating for the
affiramtive had sustained the better
argument and was declared the vic
tors, which was vociforously cheered.
The judges were Prof. E. E, De Cou
of Eugene; Prof. J. W. Branstater of
Seaside, and Mr. W. H. Powell ofj
St Helens.
Those who came from Claskanie to
hear the debate were: Mrs. and Miss
L Elliott, Mrs, L V. Maxwell and
daughter, J. H. Collins and wife, Z. L.
Eastman, W. H. Powell, M E. Page
and wife, Carrie Elertsen, Roy John
