At 8 o'clock yesterday morning the
tine steamer Hassalo, of the O. R. &
N. Company's Astoria-Portland serv
ice, blew her port cylinder head out,
at a point just this side of Altoona.
Luckily no one was injured, and the
only damage aside from the ruined
head, was the smashing of the piston
bar where it joins the crank at the
axle of the great stern-wheel. The
steamer had a number of passengers
on board, and in a few moments after
the smash, she was pluckily wending
her way up stream, landing her peo
ple, and taking on new passengers,
by means of her boats. She limped
her way into Portland late last night
and the steamer T. J. Potter will
leave out tomorrow in her place, and
if she can be gotten in readiness, may
come out tonight.
The steamship GeoV. Elder broke
the commercial ice in this port yes
terday by an earlydeparture out for
her California ports. She carried good
business above and below.
The French bark Bayard came
down the river on the hawsers of the
Harvest Queen early yesterday morn
ing, and went to sea, and Europe, on
the afternoon flood, with Captain
Poivet on the bridge, and the bar
tug Wallula at the sea end of the
tow line.
The British ship Leyland Bros., 48
days out from Varparaiso, crossed in
yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, with
Captain Morganon the bridge, and
went to an anchorage in the stream.
She is to load grain out of Portland
and will go up on the first tow that
oilers.
The Nerius Brodick Castle, Strath
blane. Largiemore, and Verbena are
all in this port awaiting despatch to
Portland, or to local docks, for dis
charge, or cargo.
The Harvest Oueen. the best thing
that floats in the service of the; O. R.
& N. in these waters, went up the
river yesterday afternoon, with the
French vessels Moliere and Marescnai
Davout on her hawsers, and did it in
fine shape. r ... ,
Portland people are inclined to find
fault with the handsome tender
Columbine on account of her black
hull, and Astoria agrees with them
precisely. It was a mistake, so far as
her appearance went, to change irom
snowv white to dismal blacK, out
the presumption if she was painted
black on account of the ease wun
which her white hull soiled and to
mitigate the work incident to the
former color.
The French bark Pierri Loti is
due Sown this morning with the Okla
hama's tow line stringing out ahead
of her. She is wheat laden for tne
United Kingdom and will take the
earliest despatch possible after arriv
ing here.

oft by Chief Deputy Collector of
Customs, Frank L. Parker, yesterday,
tho turn of $3000 being distributed
among them, and apparently all of
them who could be spared from the
vessel, were ashore and having a
good time. The McCullough has been
requested bythe owners of the over
due schooner George Watson, now 27
days out from San Francisco, for
Shoalwatcr Bay, to patrol the coast
north of North Head in search of
her; and she will leave out on this
errand' at 12 o'clock today.
The dandy sea tug Navigator came
down from Portland yesterday at 3
o'clock, with the oil barge Monterey
on her hawsers and proceeded to sea
without any delay here, except to
slow up for a bar pilot, off the Flavel
dock.
It was reported on the waterfront
yesterday afternoon that Captain
James Keating has sold the motor
launch Eagle for the sum of $400.
The French bark Bougainville,
Cantain Le Troouer, is due down
from Portland this morning on the
tow lines of the Oklahama; and she
will take the earliest despatch to sea
and Europe.
The British ship Verbena, Captain
Lee, 46 days from Callao, crossed in
yesterday, and is at anchor in the
lower harbor. She will go Portland
today on the Oklahama.
The British ship Largiemore is
alongside the coal dock and bucketing
black diamonds over the side in good
shape, and will probably have the
1600 tons landed by Monday night;
and then she will hasten to the me
tropolis to discharge the balance, and
begin loading outward.
The Lurline will be tied up under
general repair for another week or
,ten days; but the Undine is filling her
schedule in ample shape and fashion
and make-good in all ways. She went
up the river last evening with excel
lent business on both decks.
