On Tuesday evening of this week
the Scandinavian Benevolent Society
gave an entertainment in Logan's
Hall commemorating the anniversary
of the founding of the society. The
hall was artistically decorated with
flags of all nations, the Scandinavian
flan being chief among them. Ad
dresses' were made by Capt C S.
Gunderson, Mr. J. U. Anderson and
Tudee Olaf Anderson. Recitations
were itiven by Leo Wise and Mi
Reswick and musical selections, both
instrumental and vocal were rendered
by Prof. Emil Enna, the Norwegian
innnr Societv.- Mr. Zeigler, Mr.
Robert Drott, Mr. Henry Larsen
Miss Schisted. Miss Larsen. Miss
Danielson and Master Larsen. The
banquet provided under the manage
ment of Mr. Fred Johnson was ex
cellent, elaborate and varied, and the
many present thoroughly enjoyed
every minute of the evening's enter
tainment
spent in needlework, the ladies pres
ent were served with dainty refresh
'ments.
Mrs. R. M. Caston charmingly en
tertained on Friday afternoon at her
home on Commercial street in honor
of Mrs. Est es of Seattle (mother of
Dr. O. B. Estes of this city). The
ladies present brought their fancy
work and spent a very enjoyable af
ternoon. Miss Pearl Estes assisted
the hostess in serving dainty re
freshments. Those " present were
Mrs. Estes, Sr., Mrs. Alfred Kinney,
Mrs. Hawthorne, Mrs. Howes, Mrs.
Jane Smith, Mrs. Mary Smith, Mrs.
J. E. Ferguson, Mrs. O. B. Estes and
Miss Pearl Estes.
Ex-Governor T. T. Geer, of Pendle
ton visited Asitoria friends this week.
Miss Bertha Kriebohn entertained
in an informal manner on Tuesday
afternoon a number of lady friends
in honor of Miss Botifuhr. of Port
land, who was her guest The time
was pleasantly spent the hostess serv
ing dainty refreshments during the
afternoon. Those present were Mrs.
John Allen, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Charles
V. Brown, Miss Julia Bock, Miss
Marie Boetgen, Miss Hattie Kopp, of
Seaside and Miss West of Salem. .
A "National Social" was given on
Thursday evening in the parlors of
the First Methodist Episcopal Church
by the members of the Epworth
League. Many were in attendance
and all enjoyed the evening's enter
tainment immensely. The lecture
Toom was artisticaly decorated with
pictures of the presidents of these
united states and with American flags.
The dining room was in red, white
and blue. The menu cards told in
navel terms what was to eat Bean
pots were placed on the table with
the other edibles served in a corres
ponding manner. A brief musical and
literary program was rendered. Read
ings were given by Mrs. W. O. Barnes
and Mrs. Jennie Busey. Mr.' J. M.
Anderson spoke on "Patriotic
Thoughts" and Mrs. F. L. Bishop
sang "The Star Spangled Banneer"
and Mr. G. B. Johnson sang "My
Own United States."
The Dorcas Society of the First
Lutheran Church was delightfully
entertained on Friday evening by
Miss Betsy Enberg at her home in
Uppertown.
... The women of the Grand Army of
the Republic have announced a card
party to given on- the evening of
Thursday, March 5th, in Carnahan's
Hall on Exchange street- The ladies
in charge of this affair are making
every preparation to make this party,
an evening of pleasure and friends are
cordially invited to be present.

The women of the Relief Corps
gave a very successful "whist party"
on Friday evening in the upstairs
room of the A. 0. U. H. hall, Mrs.
Rowena Springer, Mrs. Staples and
Mrs.' Cleveland acting as hostesses
for this delightful event. About
hundred people were in attendance
21 tables being filled with players at
11 o'clock the prizes were distributed,
Miss Hazel Lowden winning the
ladies' first prize and Miss Reynolds
the second. Mr. Rudolph Kinkella
was the fortunate wianer of the gen
tlemen's first prize and Mr. Thomas
Dealey the second. Dainty refresh:
ments were served at the card-fables
and after some time spent in the en
joyment of the dainties placed before
them, the floor was cleared and danc
ing was engaged in for the remainder
of the evening.
This party is the first of a series to
be given by the Woman's Relief
Corps in the A. O. U. W.. Hall, the
arrangements are already being made
for another which will be given on
the evening of the fourth Friday of
March.
Mr. and Mrs. Danziger of San
Francisco who have been the guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Celler for theast
two weeks left for their home on
Friday.
Miss Birdie Gunderson entertained
about 20 friends on Friday afternoon
at her home on Fourteenth street.
Five hundred was played, Mrs. John
Eldridge winning the first prize, Mrs.
Eckstrom the second and Miss
Mayme Clinton the consolation
prize. A most delicious luncheon was
served and all present spent a very
enjoyable afternoon.
Mrs. Isaac Bergmann hospitably
entertained the members of the
Queen Louise Lodge in the A. O. 'Us
W. Hall on Tuesday afternoon with a
German "Kaffee Klatch." Everyone
present spent a delightful afternoon
and the refreshments served 'were de
licious. '
Mr. Abraham Bergmann, who has
been the guest of his brother, Mr.
Isaac Bergmann of this city left for
his home on Monday and after a two
days' stay in Portland with another
brother, wil continue his journey to
San Francisco. : '

22nd, the Rev. Mr. Ellefson united in
marriage Miss Sclma Theresa John
son and Mr. Job O. Ness. The cere
mony taking place at the residence of
Mr. Albert Sater in Uppertown.
Misses Mary Nelson and Hilda Strand

Messrs. Nels Ness and John Jensen
acted as groomsmen. At the close of

The "Losing Side" members .of the
Woman's Christian Temperance
Union gave a reception and banquet
on Thursday afternoon at the resi
dence of Mrs. Graham on Exchange
street to the winning side and a num
ber of invited guests. About SO
ladies were present and spent a very
delightful afternoon with their sewing
and pleasant conversation. Several
musical selections were rendered and
a delicious luncheon was served by
Mrs. Graham, assisted by Mesdames
Cearheart, Rannels, Morrison, and
Gaston.
On Thursday evening the Degree
of Honor gave a Leap Year Party in
honor of Mr. Thomas Dealey. Mr.
Cyrus furnished the music and those
in attendance spent a very pleasant
evening, dancing and playing games.
Excellent refreshments were served
during the time.
Mr. D. B. Alen, of Portland, for
merly a resident of Astoria, is in the
city a guest of relatives and friends.
A very successful sale of cooked
food and culinary articles was held
on yesterday afternon and evening in
the basement, of the church by the

ized a lodge of encampment in their
halL Grand Patriarch Beckwilh and
suite were present and organized and
installed the lodge which will be
known as Clatsop Encampment Xo.

Knights of Columbus of Portland
Council wil arrive in Astoria on board
the steamer T. J. Potter especially
chartered for the trip, and will organ
ize and establish a Council of the
order in this city. In this work the
visiting knights will be ably assisted
by the Rev. Father Waters and the
young people of his parish.'
The masquerade dance given by the
Astoria Football Club on last Satur
day evening in Logan's Hall was a
very successful event About 200
masquers were present and joined in
the festivities. Some handsome cos
tumes and excellent make-ups were
represented, notable among these
were "The Morning. Astorian," sev
eral "Gypsy girls" and "Indian mai
dens, the Astoria Football Club"
and several girls dressed as boys".- At
10:30 the prizes were distributed.
Miss Rose Martin in a costume of
black, sprinkled with silver stars as
Venus, the .Evening Star,' winning
the prize for the best lady character.
Miss Pearl Davich, as a French
Hussarina, in a strikingly smart red
suit with gold trimmings winning the
prize as best dressed lady. Mr. Leoj
Gramms' make-up and delineation of
the character of Uncle Sam won for
him the gentlemen's first prize. Mr.
Ed Heckard as a "Spanish Cavalier'
winning the prize for the best dressed
gentleman. Dancing was re-engaged
in and contiucd until a late hour.
An excursion and dance at Skamo-
kawa is announced for Saturday even
ing, March 28th. The steamer General
Washington has been chartered for
that occasion and will carry the As
toria contingent.
Miss Botefuhr, of Portland, and
Miss Bertha ' Kreibolm of Astoria
spent last Saturday at Seaside the
guests of Miss Hattie Kopp. , -
Mrs. C. W. Holmes entertained a
number of friends at her home on

The young lady members of the
"Glee Club" met on Wednesday
evening with Ms. Ruby Fernald to
complete arrangements for the "sheet
and pillow case" party given last
night in the National Association
Hall of Uppertown. The young peo
ple spent the evening in busy prepa
rations for the dance and thoroughly
appreciated the excellent? lunch

Missouri, was the guest this week of
her cousing, Mrs-J, E. Ferguson.
' Mrs. V. Wright, who has been ser
iously ill with the la grippe for the
past three weeks, is slowly recovering
being able to sit up part of the day.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Abcrcrombie
were tendered a charming surprise
party on Thursday. The occasion be
ing their second marriage anniversary
or "cotton wedding." About 16 guests
were present and spent a very enjoy
able evening; Five hundred was
played and dainty refreshments were
served. Mr, and Mrs. Abercrombie
were the recipients of a number of
handsome mementoes of the happy

Mrs. F.'D. Gamble delightfully en
tertained the member of the East
Astoria Social Club on Friday after
noon at her residence on Franklin
avenue and Twenty-eighth street.
Five hundred was played. Last week
the club members were entertained
by Mrs. Charles Goddard.
Mrs. Charles G. Palmberg was the
hostess on Tuesday evening of this
week for the meeting of the Clover
Club. This meeting was in the form
of a "Farewell Party" for Mrs. Palm
berg who in company with her hus
band and son will leave on Tuesday,
March 10th, for a year's tour of
Europe, and the continent. Mrs.
Palmberg was the recipient of many
tokens of regard by the club mem
bers. The Friends Thursday Club met at
the home of Mrs. Frank Linenweber
on Harrison avenue and Twelfth
stret on Thursday afternoon of this
week.

S. Perry now stationed at Tacoma,

city for several weeks has returned
to resume his duties aboard ship.

after several weeks' visit with Tacoma
