CIRCUIT COURT REC
ORD YESTERDAY
SIX CASES PRESENTED AND
ORDERS MADEONE JURY
CASE AND ITS ' VERDICT
THREE DIVORCE PLEAS.
'' 'C mmmmm c.
' .
Hi Honor, Judge McBride, of the
circuit court, yesterday took judicial
cognizance of six cases aet for the
day, and made the following orders
therein, to-wit:
4 In the matter of Ed. Anderson vs.
D. Cnmmings et. at.; default was en
tered and judgment taken as against
D. Cumings; and the attached prop
erty ordered sold. Later in the day,
upon motion of Attorney Howard
Brownell, who appeared for Mr.
Cummings, these orders were vacated
entirely, on the ground that Defend
ant Cummings atill had a day more
in which to answer.
In the matter of Jennie L. Irving
vs. Owen J. Irving, for divorce; de
cree was granted as prayed for.
, In the case of the State of Oregon
vs. Robert Wilberg, an order was
made and entered directing C E.
Runyon, court stenographer, to make
a transcript of the testimony.
In the case of Isaac Bergman vs.
B. S. Worsley, civil, action for
money; on trial before a jury, cer
dict was rendered , in favor of the
plaintiff in the sum of $50.80. The
court thereupon discharged all the
jurors for the term, saving those
dwelling within the City of Astoria.
In the matter of the proceedings
for divorce instituted by Mrs. Anna
M, Gates against Ire E. Gates, hos
pital steward at Fort Stevens, the
court heard the testimony of the prin
cipals and at once granted the decree
of divorce; reserving his decision as
to the matters' of the . maintenance
charge in behalf of the: pl-intiff and
the custody of her boy baby, until
he could inquire further into condi
tions surrounding the case. This is
a case that has aroused no little in
terest with those who have come in
touch with the details j s an ; interest
that has unqualified centered n the
unhappy wife. ' '
Court adjourned until 9 a. m. to
day. .
Crop conditions are ; unusually
oromisine, the wheels of trade are
moving, and prosperity is returning
in all parts of the country. There is
nothing in the general situation upon
which the Democrats can hope to
predicate a successful campaign.

The Instinct of Design.
, When a Japanese canuot mold the
shape of an object, when he cannot re
deem It by a design, when! In fact, he
has no control over Its creation at all,
but tt Is placed In his hands as It Is,
finished, says . the author of "Kake
mono," he wilt still contrive to add
beauty to it merely by arrangement
"I first noticed this on board the
steamer going out," says Mr. Edwards,
"where the Japanese boy arranged the
extra blanket on the berth in a new d
sign each day. He folded tt Into lotus
leaves and chrysanthemums,' Into half
opened fans ami half shut buds. ; Ho
had one wonderful arrangement which,
being patriotic, was more often repeat
ed than the rest The blankets of the
steamship company had at top and bot
tom two wavy red lines on a whlre
ground. By some wonderful twist of
his fingers the boy would fold that
blanket Into the rising sun, with the
four red lines coming out of It ULe
blood red rays. He did it so perfectly
that I recognized the flag of Japan tho j
moment I saw It" Youth's Compau-j
