The boys up at the United Wirele
station on Smith's Point, early yes
terday morning, picked up a message
from the battleships Maryland and
West Virginia, then off Cape Blanco,
announcing that all was well, and ask
ing for "war news"; to which "Fuwy"
replied with what of thrilling items
he possessed. The vessels are on
their way to the Bremerton navy
yard and will join the great Armada
when it shall arrive in the harbor of
San Francisco. They also picked up
a message from Point Loma, 1200
miles to the southward.
The steamship Senator got away
from the 0. R. & N. piers in this city
at 2 a. m. yesterday, with good busi
ness in all departments; but the hour
of departure chosen for a passenger
packet was, to say the least of it,
unearthly. But time and tide and
steamships), wait for no man, and
rarely consult his convenience.
The French bark Guethary, Captain
Loisel, went to sea yesterday after
noon, bound for Falmouth, England,
for orders. V
The steamer Asuncion arrived in
from San Francisco yesterday after
noon and went on to the metropolis
after a brief stay in these waters

out of Portland, for the Orient
The P. & A. liner Alesia docked at
the O. R. & N. piers yesterday even
ing, taking on 140 tons of stuff for
Shanghai, and then departed for the
bar and deep water. She attracted a
Lvi .l.al of attention, as she has nev
er docked here before, and is one of
the finest freighting craft of the Pa
cific water. The Alcsia spent that
night here taking on her oderiferous
load, there being 2S00 sacks of the
fertiliser in the shipment. She wilt
probably go over the bar this morn
ing. ,

and other Sound ports with supplies
for the light stations up that way.
The Heather is on the way at Brem
erton and good for another month
up there; while the Columbine is due
in this port at almost any hour.

we have heard that name somewhere
in the dim and distant past!
The British steamship Mortlake is
among the vessels of the wheat fleet
due down from Portland and is likely
to show up on this side of Tongue
Point at most any old time.
Keep an eye open for the racing
steamers Roanoke and Rose City, due
in this harbor tomorrow afternoon or
evening.
The British bark Alexander Black
is due down from Portland tomorrow
evening, en route to the United
Kingdom, with 90,000 bushels of
wheat in her hold.
the steamer Alliance will be down
from Portland early this morning, on
her way to Coos Bay points.
The steamer Santa Rita is due down
the river this morning outward
bound for California, for more oil.

the enemies but the servants of the;
people. To secure proper service,
they must be subject to regulation. It
must be taken as firmly established
that the evils of rebating and of un
just discrimination will not be toler
ated and that adequate and impartial
service upon reasonable terms must
be insisted upon. There must be ma
chinery through which public obliga
tions as defined by law may be en
forced. This can best be obtained
through an administrative board such
as the- Interstate Commerce Commis
sion. The question of rates must be
determined after full consideration of
all pertinent facts to the end that the
requirements of impartiality and rea
sonableness may be complied with
while at the same time fair returns
to the owners may be assured. Noth
ing should be lacking in administra
tive powers for the attainment of
these objects.
"It is also essential that there
should-be efficient supervision of the
issue of securities to avoid the evils
of inflation and of over-capitalization.
"In our legislation and administra
tion, we must favor no class but pro
tect the interests of all our citizens.
While the nation may devote its pow
ers to this end so far as matters are
within federal control, our state gov
ernments and local communities must
not miss their great opportunities. In
the use of all these powers, accord-'
ing to their constitutional distribu
tion, for the development of our re
sources, the encouragement of agri
culture, the, improvement of the con
ditions of labor and the safeguarding
of the, freedom of commerce, we
shall progress toward the attainment
of the aims of liberty. Let us realize
our mutual dependence and rejoice
with Washington, not in power, but
in service, not in distinction, but in
duty well performed, not in what we
km gained, but In what we have
