THE BOARD WALK AND PIER. SEASIDE.
SEASIDE, THE FAMOUS
COAST RESORT.
HT THE sheltered end of the great sweeping bight formed by the
frrwning, mountainous pile of Tillamook Head and the foothill
that run down to the const from Saddle Mountain ami its kindred
heights, lies the famous sea resort of Oregon, the city of Seaside; a town
with a normal, out-of -season population of 1200 souls, a long-summer
population of from seven to nine thousand; and a transient list of
happy visitors verging close upon the 100,000 mark each year.
Its miles of fine beach and its glory of turbvileut, yet rythmic wean
water, breaking ceaselessly and grandly, from the giant cape on the
south, to the mouth of the beautiful Neeanicnm on the north, give every
tourist and seeker after rest, tangible and anient cause for his and her
stay there, be it for an hour, a day, or a season.
The place is amenable to a full municipal government, which i
administered with careful oversight, not alone for the comfort and pro
tection of the home-people, but for the shifting thousands that seek
pleasure there during the year. At present this public duty lies in the
capable of Mayor W. S. Ilenninger; Recorder W. E. Burke, and Coun
cilmen F. H. Moore (at large), T. J. Haycox, F. II. Laighton, A. W.
Duncan, and A. W. Anderson. The city owns a fine site on which i
erected a creditable city hall, the whole valued at $9000; and harbor
in the same building its fire-fighting apparatus, as well as the city
offices. Th finances of Seaside are in admirable condition, the city
having no warrant indebtedness, and owes only for its water plant
bonds in a sum approximating $12,000; and owns and manages its water
source and service, and this, with $3000 cash in its treasury; so that
with this good year it starts practically even with the outer world, from
a business standpoint
It has ample postal facilities to meet the varying demands of its
service at all times of the year, and this element of public accommoda
tion is in the capable hands of Mr. Edwin S. Abbott. A marshal and
fire chief, with proper assistance, keep instant oversight on the safety
uul peace of townsman and visitor alike, ami do it well.
With '300 little people to educate, it miihttains a tine public school,
erected at a cost of $8000; and these interests are safeguarded by School
Directors R. J. Thorpe and A. II. Wilson, with J. W, Hranstator, as
principal ; and are flourishing with marked success. This year witnesses
the introduction of the Twelfth grade, the complete high school course,
at this point. Other important moral factors in this up-to-date place
are three flourishing churches; the Methodist Episcopal, with an $8lKMI
house and a lare congregation; and the Protetfnnt Episcopal, and the
Roman Catholic Churches, each with their own houses of worship and
large and devoted congregations. These agencies have contributed
heavily to the proven access of population and improvement that, it is
said, have trebled in the past two years.
The city site is a large, roomy range of hill, valley and beach land,
and discountenances anything approaching congestion of habitat or
highway, always a distinct charm in places of resort like this. It lies
beautifully and is traversed, without fatigue, to and from its myriad
