and her hold full of merchandise.
The French bark Guetheray did not
arrive down from Portland until a
late hour last night She came down
on the lines of the Oklahama. f
The Portland-Asiatic liner Alesia
is due down from the metropolis this
afternoon, on her way to the Orient,
and will dock at the 0. R. & N. piers
here for 140 tons of fertilizer, shipped
hence by Mr. De Force. She will
then proceed directly to sea.
The steamer Nahcotta went on her
old run at 10:4S o'clock yesterday
morning, headed out for lllwaco in
all her new glory. She works like a
charm, and is all ready for the sum
mer business, which will materialize
pretty quickly if this weather holds
out
The steamer Wenona, now the pro-,
perty of the Gray's River Transporta
tion Company, with Captain Hull, in
command, will begin her new sche
dule on Monday next, making a tidal
run each day except Sunday, from
the East slip at the Callender docks.

Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
SONS OP OEOBOB C. BOWDEK.
Geo. C. Bowden, of Little Rock, Ark., haa used Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy in his family for many years, and Is seldom without It In the
house. He says: "Chamberlain's Cough Remedy haa proved a great
relief to our boys In their throat and lung troubles. A few doses of It will
ward off a threatened attack of croup, and a bad cold Is quickly cured by
its use. I take pleasure in recommending it." The prompt cures of colds
and croups effected by this preparation, the fact that it can always be de
pended upon, is pleasant to take and contains no opium, chloroform or
other objectionable drug, has made it a favorite with the parents of young
children. When you have a cough or cold, try it and see for yourself what
an excellent medicine it is. Price, 25 cents. Large sbse, 50 cents.
City are due in these water on a
racing schedule. The Rose City left

with the latter's call at Eureka, she
will be just that miich. ahead of the
Rose City plus her two hours delay

The steamer Alliance is due back
from Portland on her way to Coos
Bay, at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning,
and will leave out immediately.
The steamer Northland is due to
arrive here from the Bay City some
time today. As is the steamer Han
alei, of the same line.
The schooner Marconi, of the Simp
son fleet at Knappton, opposite this
city, is now 112 days out from Sidney,
with coal for G. W. McNear, of Port
land. They are quoting 25 per cent
re-insurance on her at this time, and
there is serious uneasiness on the
score of her long delay. Frank Gait
her of Knappton shipped on her when
she left here for Australia, and this,
coupled with the fact that Captain
Wilson, and a number of his crew are
of this section, deepens the interest
in her whereabouts. Of course hope has
not been abandoned and there is yet
plenty of chance for her safe arrival,
but she is way overdue and all hands
will feel easier when she is reported
on the hither side of the Columbia
bar.
There has been no re-insurance
quoted, as yet, on the revenue cutter
McCullough, but she is long overdue
at this port. When last heard from
she was to leave the bay of San
Francisco, direct for the port of As
toria, her station, but no word, nor
sign, has been vouchsafed the people
here of this elusive and much-wanted
vessel, and an accounting is due.
The Armeria went out to the light
ship, No. 50, yesterday, with one of
the latter's whale boats, which was
delivered and the -flag-tender returned
to port without delay.
The steamer Lurline came down
promptly on time last evening,' and
among other items of cargo for, this
port, delivered 25 head of beeves for
Christianson & Company. She went
back to the metropolis at 7 o'clock,
with plenty of business.
The steamer F. S. Loop came down
from Portland early yesterday and
went directly to sea and San Fran
cisco. ,-' - . "' ' ; '

TESTING SEEDS FOR FARM.
The other' day a rascal was found
to have made a smalt fortune by
chopping up patmleuf fans and sell
ing the stuff at a dollar t packet,
containing a pinch or two of the prec
ious dust which was said to be the
seed of a rare exotic flower. So
writes W. G. Fitt-Gerald in the Tech
nical World Magazine for March.
He advertised widely, and number
ed professional florists among his
victims. True, he disclaimed respon
sibility for the germinating power of
hi, "seed," but this is a. common
warning even on the wares of reput
able seedsmen, so that the buyers
planted, watched, and watered with
pathetic zeal until at length an angry
lady laid the swindler by the heels.
Now, farm and flowers seed of the
highest quality is costly stuff. So
minutely is that of the cake olaria
that the actual cost of producing the
finest strain exceeds ten times the
wcjght of the seed in purest gold.
Mignomtte seed, too, is by no means
cheap, yet that of the begonia is at
least sixty times dearer; and a libercl
allowance for a two dollar packet is
measured in a tiny spoon with an
outside diameter of three-sixteenths
of an inch. And yet in that .small
spoonful there will be enough seed to
produce more than a hundred stately
begonia plants I
The writer goes on to describe the
careful testing seeds undergo at the
hands of the experts in the reliable
seed house, and of government in
spectors, and an interesting series of
photographs illustrates the text.
