LABOR UNIONS.
Compers Requested to Call Conven
tion to Nominate Federal Officer!
NEW YORK, Feb. 10,-At a meet
ing of the Federated Union held yes
terday President Samuel Gompers of
the American federation of Labor,
was requested by resolution to call
a convention of labor union represen
tatives from all over the country for
the purpose of nominating candidates
for president and vice-president of
the United States, and adopting a
platform for a national labor party.
The recent decision of the supreme
court in which labor laws were de
clared unconstitutional, were criti
cised and it was declared that labor
ing men throughout the country must
combine to change the constitution.
Judges, it was said, owed their ap
pointments to men opposed to labor
and must be superseded before labor
would receive the justice to which it
is entitled. '

MONSTERS OF SEA FIGHT.
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. lO.-Pas-sengers
on the City of Para which
arrived yesterday from Panama, re
ported that when off San Lucas they
saw a great battle between an enor
mous whale and a thrasher.. The
whale was a monster and was en
gaged in an attempt to kill the
thrasher. The sea monsters battled
viciously, churning the ocean into a
mass of bloody foam. The fight was
brought close up to the ship and the
passengers on the City of Para could
see all details of the battle to the
death. After fighting for nearly an
hour alongside the ship the whale
seemed to gain the mastery and both
dove into the sea, leaving a wave of
crimson as the only sign of the car
nage.
