Quo evunliiK at u bull nt ttio German
embassy nt Paris M. tie B.. a brilliant

Loudon Times nt the French capital,
una standing looking ou nt the dan
cers when a girl possessing a Teutonic
cast of comitcunueo passed leaning on
the ii rm of the German nmhnssnrior.
Her eyes met theme, of De B.. and,
though she lowered them modestly,
mill there was that lu her exprefwlon
which revealed to tho young Journalist
that he hail nmde an Impression. Ho
sought tho ambassador uiul begged an
Introduction. It was granled, and Do
II. was presented to Mario von I'llen
stein of Berlin, a niece of Prltico Bis
ninrck. 1'H B. met the fraulcln often In so
ciety, and at every meeting tho mutu
al pleasure appeared to bo greuter
than at the previous one. Within a
few weeks ho was encouraged to make
ber a proportion of marriage. Bho ac
knowledged that sho was greatly pleas
ed with hliu, but that no definite an
swer could be given without consulta
tion with her family, and cspeclolly her
uncle, the chancellor.
"You think." sho added, "that I nm
seizing upon a pretext to put you off.
To couvlnce you to tho contrary, I will
conflde to you what this engrossing
subject Is. Our government, fearful
Hint France, displaying such remark
alilo recuperative powers, will soon
grow strong enough to tuke revenge for
tho blow received In the late war, is
about to pick a qunrrel with the French,
march ou l'nrls and level it"
Tho Importing of such n remarkable
pleco of news to hliu, a Journalist, by
a niece of tho real ruler of Gormnny
threw Do n. Into a fearful state of
doubt. What could It mean? He soon
loft the fraulolu, going to another
'apartment to think. Two Germans
near him were talking together, and
he beard ono of thorn mention the
name of Marie von Ullonsteln, where
upon the other added, "It Is said that
tho chancellor intrusts her with many
delicate bits of diplomacy."
The words did not reassure the lis
tener. vHe left the embassy, went to
his apartments and lay awake all night
thinking of his strange adventure.
What should he do? Whether the news
the f rauleln had given him was true or
false, It was bis duty as a Frenchmnn
to Impart it to tho president of France.
Hut this compelled the betrayal of a
confidence reposed In him by the girl
lie loved. After a terrible mental strug
gle, absent tho Information to bis pa

Hon of the news slip bad given him he ;
beard thnt she had left Paris. One of j
two thlugs' was probnMo, Either she j
hud been recalled by her uucle to he;
punished for revealing state secrets or j
she had manufactured the news to test I
him. As time passed and he heard
nothing of German preparation to In- i
vndo France he made up his mind that
tho latter hypothesis was correct. In
either case his mental sufferings were
almost unendurable, loving desperate
ly, as he did. the girl whose confidence
ho had violated.
Thou camo an offer from n Paris pa

and ho went to Berlin. It was not long
before he mot her lu company. To his
surprise she nodded to him and smiled.
Her nctlon couvluced him that sho had
manufactured tho news she had given
him and, finding him unworthy, had
become Indifferent to bim. Eager to
learn tho truth, he took the first oppor
tunity to Jolu hr.'
"Well," ho said, "yon saw that I re
garded my duty Instead of my love."
"Don't let us talk or that," she re
plied. "Your act did ho harm."
"No," he said gloomily. "There Is
no harm In manufactured news."
"The news was not manufactured.
You did your duty. Why have you
not written mo?" '
"I? Write yon after' having reveal
ed your secret?"
"I expected you to revoul It. Indeed,
I wished you to do so." '
"Why?"
"If I had Intended the secret to be
kept, I 'would not have Imparted It to
you. Your duty to your country com
pelled you to reveal, it." .
"You used me ns n tool, then."
"Yes."
"And your consent to consider me a
suitor was a part of your scheme."
"It had nothing to do with my
scheme."
A flood of Joyous relief welled up
In Do B. "You have given mo one
commence," ne bum. "ir you are uoi .
displeased witn mo, give uie anotner.
Explain."
"I have nt times." she replied, "been
Intrusted by my uncle with delicate
diplomatic maneuvers. Ho had been
long worried by the war party who
were determined to destroy France,
thus antagonizing tho civilized world.
Finally they carried the day, and war
was decided on. My uncle commis
sioned me to go to France and let out
the secret, especially for England, ex
pecting that power would interfere. I
chose you as my medium. As soon as
the news was published in England
word was communicated by the Brit
ish minister here that if we attacked
France we must also attack England.
That settled the matter."
Later the betrothal of M. de B. and
Marie von Ullenstein was announced.
