CLEVER MR. SEUFERT.
F. A. Seufert has won the appro
bation of the Oregonian by his time
ly declaration in favor of state aid to
the proposition to keep the Colum
bia river open for eternity, so that
the commerce of the whole Oregon
country may be deflected to and from
the Portland markets. Mr. Seufert is
a clever man, with a cherished idea
of his own in the shape of fishwheels,
wherefor he desires friendly avouchal
of that influential paper when the
proper time comes to sway public
opinion in their favor as against the
protest of the thousands of men at
this end of the river who are engaged
in the salmon fisheries, and whose
business is jeopardized by Mr. Seu
fert's reckless and predatory style of
fishing. Mr. Seufert is to be compli
mented on his adroitness, but we fear
it will not pan out just as he has
figured it might
In the first place state aid is not
needed for the Port of Portland. The
people of Portland may have spent s!l
the Oregonian claims they have spent
in deepening the channel of the river
hence to the metropolis, and it was ft
commendable thing for them to do,
and they have won untold volumnes
of sheer profit from the enterprise;
they have been paid over and over
again for all they have done in the
Vremise; but the people at large are
not yet ready to be taxed to build r.p
that, or any other particular port;
they expect the ports to get in and do
these things for themselves, and this
will be found the gauge if ever the
audacious plan is submitted.
We are all proud of Portland and
her commercial achievement and
would like to see it enhanced immeas
urably, but not by direct state taxa
tion. That will be resisted to the last
ditch, and the dregonian knows it
better than any of us. There may be,
in time, half a hundred ports between
the Columbia bar and falls of the
Willamette, and they must take care
of the river with such help as tne
government will allow; but there w;ll
be no building up of even our great
est port to the derogation and disuse
of other hopeful communities along
the line.
The Port of Portland is an immense
factor in the commerce of Oregon
and yet it is not the whole thing in
this state. Even Astoria hopes to
share its preferential status some
day, and do business for the state and
the whole Columbia basin, . without
being subject t to the overwhelming
prerogatives that Commission would
assume 6n the Columbia river.
When the Oregonian talks about
the general good of the State of
Oregon it should bear in mind that a
vast majority of Oregonians are in
clined to the belief that it means
Portland, that being about all there
is to this commonwealth, on the upper
floors of the building with the tall
tower. Not always, of course, but
generally speaking; and invariably,
when the Columbia river (either end
of it) is under discussion.
progress and enfranchisement of man
kind through the simpler forms and
examples of republican government.
This deep ardor for release from
the traditional things of the past is
at the bottom of all the political
murders of the time, and, especially
is this so in the Latin countries,
where such expedients are deemed apt
and conclusive and are not reckoned
with such dread and distaste as they
are in lands where civilization de

THE PORTUGAL HORROR.
The news from Lisbon of the as
sassination of the king and crown
prince of Portugal, dreadful as it is,
is but another tremendous expression
of that human longing for more free
dom, politically, than men are allowed
under monarchies. The world is ad
vancing rapidly and what was toler

ASTORIA IN THE FIESTA.
There is a splendid opportunity
ahead of this city for impressing the
people of Portland and her thousauds
of visitors with the conviction that
Astoria is really within the limits of
Oregon; and that is by devising a
magnificent float for the great Rose
parade that is to mark the opening of
the Fiesta there this summer. N'o
effort should be spared by our people
to make a winner. We have as many
and beautiful roses as any commun
ity in all Oregon and we should send
such a display as will forever nuke
ns notable in the pleasant annals of
such a competition.
The glory of the Oregon rose is a
common possession and will serve ad
mirably as a vehicle for conveying a
sense of our importance as an outpost
of civilization to our friends up the
river and their friends from abroad.
The proposal adverted to by Manager
Whyte in his report to the Chamber of
Commerce last evening, must not be
forgotten, for a successful venture in
this may react in favor of our
own, regatta later in the season.
