In New Orlcunti lust a fun that some

murk of favor from the king of France,
A dlllgout sunn.ii was uiude, but the
fan was not recovered. Mis Tblba
deaux was very miuh exorcised over
the loss and In a moment of Impulse
said to several geutloiuen who stood
about her discussing tbs probable
whereabouts of the fan, "I will give
to whoever funis It-I will give"
"Yournolf?" asked on of the men.
"Yea, and my fortuuo."
The words were no Vooner uttered
than the lady- regretted them as fool
lsh. Besides, la those times they were
mora liable to be taken seriously tUau
they would now bo, and a lady would
feel It to he more Incnmbeut upon her
to stand by them. Tha man who bad
undo the suggestion, Albert Mason.
was a suitor of hers-a suitor aha bad
no Intention of accepting and among
the men In the group was Henry Du
Pont, whom she felt very much In
clined to accept The reason she had
not done so was because he bad not
asked bar, and the reason ha had not
asked her waa because she owned by
Inheritance sereral sugar plantations,
while be wus poor. Possibly she had
fallen In with Mason's suggestion In
order to give Du Pont a chance to win
her by finding her fan. Thert would
at least be an exciting rival search, be
tween him and Mason.
When the next evening Du Pout call
ed on Miss Tblbadtraux, she. supposing
he had come to bring her fan, met Dim
with a throbbing heart When he fail
ed to speak of the matter, she said Impatiently:
My fuu-tuis It been fouml?"
It will bo fouml," he replied stm
tentlously.
A servant entered with the fan aud
note from Mason snylug: "1 claim
the first part of the reward. The see
ond, your for tune, I do tint claim."
Miss Thibudenux wus vexed. Unv
tag done ouo foolish thing, she proceed
ed to re-enforce It by doing another.
"I will give myself," she suld extit
dry, "to the man who will prevent in;
having to break nnd yet not keep my
promise."
"And. then." suld Dn Pont, "you will
give yourself to the man who will en
able you to break honorably with the
new winner."
"The next winner shall recelvo the
reward, and It shall be given willing
iy"
It was the averted face rather thuu
the words that gave blin ber meanlug
lie understood It perfectly, but with
out a word of reply left her and went
to the rooms of Albert Mason.
"Mason." be said, "you certainly are
not going to take au advantage of Miss
Tbibadeanx In the matter or ber fanf
Muson looked surprised. "What Is
that to you?" he osked.
"This: I saw Miss Thlbadeaux drop
her fan and saw you pick it up. You
bad It when you suggested the re'
ward."
Mason pa led. "I certainly aim 1 1 not
can not-force Miss Thlbiuleanx to keep
ber promise." be said.
"Vou should release her from It"
"That suggestion should come from
her."
"She U Just too person It should not
come from."
"And suppose I refuse?"
"I shall make known the fact that
you have tukeu an unfair, advantage
of a lady."
"Have you witnesses?"
"None that I know of."
"Then It is your word against mine.
But It Is not ueccssary that the lady
should be brought Into the affair. You
have accused me of a dishonorable act.
I suppose you will not refuse me satis
faction." "Certainly not."
"Very well, after we have settled the
matter between ourselves you are at
liberty to go to Miss Thlbadeaux with
your accusation against me."
This was equivalent to saying that
Du Pout would be prevented, for Ma
son bad been out sereral times nnd
bad always killed his man. The ac
cusation would die with the accuser.
; The next morning at sunrise the two
principals were being placed at a
point a short distance up the Missis
sippi -under the Uwee whou a clatter
of hoofs was heard, and Miss Thlba
deaux. mounted, dashed In between
them.
"Gentlemen," she said, "I know
something as to the cause of this af
fair; I can Infer something, and of the
rest I am ignorant Last night a lady
came to me and said that she had seen
you, Mr. Masou. pick up my fun soon
after I had dropped it."
There was silence for a moment.
Then she continued: :
"If this affair has to do with the
finding of my fan I beg that it be dis
continued." : Mason handed his pistol to a second
and, making a low bow to the lady,
went to bis carriage. Then the party
separated, returning to the city, Du
