A HOME-PORT FOR US.
We are going to campaign relig
iously for the Port of Astoria, mat
mav as well be understood first, as
last We won one fight against the
imposition of what was deemed
Portland's encroachment upon this
particular right and we would be false
to every doctrine of local enterprise
na eonitv if we did not stand un
grudgingly and unremittingly for this
plan of our own. No Astorian has a
chaHnv of riffht to antagonize this
scheme, even by the way of "damn
ing it with faint praise" or by a more
significant silence. It is positively
essential to every future maritime cal
rotation we may make and will es
tahli'ch us on a sound footing for the
prosecution of everything we need
most
The initiative does not take the
matter beyond the purview of the
municipal electorate; we do not nave
to submit the proposition to the
authorities at Salera nor to the
nin nf State nor county; it is
purely a city matter and will go be
fore the people of Astoria as an
amendment to the charter of Astoria.
The eieht citizens in charge of the
preliminaries are capable and reliable
men, ambitious for the good of the
community and when they shall be
ready to pass the subject up to the
voters, it will be in safe and unassail
able shape and all that will then be
necessary to do is to vote it solidly
and let the commercial world, the
government, and our neighbors, know
that we are a unit for it It is the
first steD to our own salvation and
must be taken, else we convict our
selves completely of being a "dog in
the maneer." We will have fought
off others from our harbor- and will
do nothine for it ourselves; a position
we cannot occupy with any possible
credit
even controlled, let alone subjected.
Well, it is the same eld story, told
and retold in the histories of the
centuries and but quickens the world s
old conviction that there must
be some tremendous underlying evil
borne by this light-hearted, sunny
soulcd race that has fought and won
a thousand battles for every nation
on earth, and cannot master its own
deep wrongs against the English. No
man can say where it will end; the
Englishman certainly ciinnot, and tne
Irishman does not care Hatred for
everything and person English is in
the very corpuscles of the Irish Diooa
and will be found there when the last
son of Erin drains h:$ last fighting
drop in this everlasting fight.

THE CHAMBER IN SHAPE.
The Astoria Chamber of Commerce
is in full rig and regalia for the new
year, with a rattling lot of committee
men in charge of the departmental
work and lots of work on hand. It is
like a giant refreshed and ready for
battle, and while Astoria may have
o avowed enemies who are likely to
give battle, she must enter the lists
of strife and competition as she has
never done before, not even last year,
and her champion, the Chamber is
afoot and afield for the contest The
whole city is behind.it, shoulder to
should and this is to be her ban
ner year of achievement; therefore,
let no man neglect his duty, but rally
strongly and honestly to the engage
ment and win out good, and sure and
for all time. And don't forget that
the Astorian is an ally in the cause,
whatever guise it may take.

ENGLAND'S ETERNAL ENEMY.
The Marquis of Londonderry has
precipitated the "Irish Question" upon
the British parliament in a manner
that is likely to move the government
to its quiescent core. He avers that
the reign of the Irish League is more
powerful, dominant, and bitter than
even in the dark days of the
"Eighties" and , that governmental
cowardice is responsible for the con

The foreign trade of the United

DANGER SIGNAL NO. 1 comes
from the kidney secretions. They
will warn you when the kidneys are
sick. Well kidneys excrete a clear,
amber fluid. Sick kidneys send out a
thin, oale and foamy, or a thick, red,
ill-smelling urine, full of sediment and
irregular of passage.
DANGER SIGNAL NO. 2 comes
from the back. Back pains, dull and
heavy, or sharp and acute, tell you
of sick kidneys and warn you of the
annroach of droosv. diabetes and

P. J. Ritchey, living on Seventh St.,
Hillsboro, Ore., says: "For a long
time I suffered from an acute attack
of kidney trouble. My kidneys were
very irregular and secretions passing
very frequently and were attended by
severe pain. They were also very
scanty and my bladder seemed to be
very weak. I tried a number of
remedies that were said to cure kid
nev trouble, but received no relief."
! At last I saw an advertisement of
Doan's Kidney Pills, and procured a
box. The pains left and as I con
tinued to use them the trouble entire
ly vanished. I gradually grew better
and now I am without a sign of kid
ney trouble. I recommend Doan's
Kidney Pills at every opportunity.'
