BATTLE FOR PROHIBITION
Efforts Will Probably be Mads to
Restrict European as Well as the
Asiatic Immigration Object Land
Fraud Cases Being Tried There.
WASHINGTON', Jan. 27-Bcyond
the preliminary of the currency ques
tion and the Introduction of numer
ous mcasurei calculated to cure finan
cial ill, Congress thus far since the
holiday recess ha busied itself pri
ncipally in planning numerous and
Sunday bills for the immediate bene
fit and relief of the resident! of the
District of Columbia. There has been
agitation in previous congresses to
oecure cheaper gas, lower street car
fares, and universal transfer as for
the nation, but never before was there
such interest taken in these matters
by o many different members in both
houses of , the national legislature.
The attention of the members to the
needs of Washington doubtless was
first attracted by the need for an ex
tension of the street railway tracks
to the new union station. The termi
nal was formally opened and put into
use by the railroads only a few days
before the Sixtieth Congress assembl
ed, and the incoming members were
thoroughly impressed with the need
for immediate action by the long
walk they were compelled to take
over muddy roads and dirt pavements
to the nearest street car line. Then
the champions of a universal trans
fer ystcm and of three cent fares got
busy, and have insisted that no track
age legislation be put throught with-1
out provision for their pet hobics.
From this contemplation of the
wrongs heaped upon Washington by
the public service corporations, it
was but a step to additional reforms,
and these, hinted at in a "show me"
resolution introduced by Represcnta
live Shacklcford of Missouri, which
directs the Secretary of Commerce
and Labor to investigate and report
upon the affairs of all public service
corporations in the District, including
street railway, telephone, electric
lighting and sas companies. . .
While the atention of the general
public is taken up with the talk of
possible war with Japan and everyone
is following the progress of the bat
tleship quadron round the Horn, a
mighty army is being quietly marshal
led here in Washington and prenara-
ions for a bitter internecine struggles
are being pushed vigorously. And it
will be a fierce fight, ending only
when the aggressors are victorious.
This is the fight which the advocates
of prohibition are planning to make
before Congress for the enactment of
laws which will shut out the "Demon
Run" from the District of Columbia.
If anyone thinks that the matter is
purely a local iiie they will find
themselves very much mistaken. For
the hosts of temperance, believing
that the time has come when they
can force such , a measure through
Congress, and realizing what an im
pctus would be given their caused by
thus committing, the federal govern
mcnt, art determiued to make every
shot count and will leave no stone
unturned in razing the bulwarks of
the liquor interests. Washingtonians
will have very little voice in the fight
which i9 to leave the city "wet" or
"dry", for the outcome will very
largely depend upon the pressure ex
erted on the individual members from
their home districts and states. No
quarter will be given, none asked; it
will be a fight to the finish!
landed on the eastern coast from the
nations of Europe and ask significant
iy about the Oriental immigration
that swarms into Pacific ports, ac
cumulates a goodly portion of Uncle
Sam' gold and then turns back to
the Far East. While this argument
is by no means a new one, it is very
probable that it-will prove more
potent in winning friend for the re
stricted immigration movement, in
view of the recent money famine.
' i
Washington taxpayers have raised
a' big howl over the action of the
Department of Justice in removing
the western land fraud cases from the
Pacific coast to those of the District.
secretary Bonaparte submitted to
Congress a request for an emergency
appropriation of $49,000 to cover the
expense of trying these cases in I
city. Under the law one half of the
expense of running the District gov
ernment is borne by Congress and
one half by the taxpayers of the Dis
trict. The' trial of the Hyde-Benson
Dimond and Schneider cases in this
jurisdiction will mean that one half
of the expense of witnesses fees,
jurors' fees, bailiffs fees and mis
cellaneous court expenses must be
paid by the property holders of Wash
ington. , They are imposed uppn of
ten enough as it is, but when it comes
to. making them pay for something
which they don't want and in which
they have no interest, they feel rt-
scntful. However, it is not believed
that the Department of Justice will
change its program, and if Congress
sees fit to grant Secretary Bonaparte's
request, the District government will
have to pa the fiddler despite the
fact that it doesn't dance.
A RECORD BREAKER.
Last Year's Sales of Hyomei
Guaranteed Cure for Catarrh,
Larger Than Ever.
the
The merits of Hyomei the treatment
that cures catarrh without stomach dos
ing, its popularity and , growth, are
uniquo in the annals of medicine. So
pronounced is the relief and curs fol
lowing the use of this treatment that
it ha been publicly recommended by
leading druggists and physicians in
nearly every Stat and town 'la the
country, with the result that last year's
sales were larger than aver.
The fact that Hyomei la so simple and
complete, and that it cure by breathing
medicated air and not taking drug into
the atomach, no doubt ha helped to
create xhi wide-spread and rapidly In
creasing army of friend.
The mray in which it ha been sold by
T. F. Launn ha undoubtedly aided
greatly it introduction in Astoria. He
is such a firm believer in the power of
Hyomei to cure all catarrhal troubles,
that he urges people to use it with the
understanding that the cost will be re
funded to anyone who is not benefitted
by the treatment. You do not risk a
cent in testing the healing virtues of
Ilyomtl, for T. A. Laurin take all the
chances of its giving satisfaction and
leave you to be the judge.
An anarchist is a man without a
country and also a man that any
country is glad to be without
Renewed efforts probably will be
made in the 60th Congress to restrict
European as well Asiatic immigra
tion. Friends of the movement to
put at least a temporary stop to the
influx of low class Europeanans are
pointing out that fully $100,000,000 of
American gold was taken back to
Eurooe last vear by the emigrating
foreigners who had come to these
shores 500,000 strong and recouped
their broken fortunes at the expense
of this country. They point to these
figures to show that instead of the
labor and money brought from Europe
remaining here to help develop this
great country,- these aliens have only
stayed in America long enough to
turn their capital over and then have
gone back from whence they came,
leaving the United States poorer, but
not even wiser.', They urge that these
figures relate only to those who have
