just as much gambling as wheels and

play cards if they have to lock them
selves in a cellar or attic. We can seke
machines and tables and wheels and
throw them overboard or burn them,
but we cannot throw card players over
board or burn them; you can arrest
them and juries will not agree; but we
do not need to wait on juries as to
gambling devices; we. have stopped 90
per cent of the gambling; we have closed
the dance halls and that is a pretty
good record for one year. I have per
formance to my credit, not only talk;
the world was not made in one day; let
us be reasnable; sure, they say, there
is just as much gambling as ever; well
if there is whv do they, then! but
there isn't and you know it; if there ii
any place where young men are allowed
to play cards, let me know the place
and they'll stop; if any . councilman
knows of a better plan tell me how; I
have shown that I'm not afraid to act,
when actions could bring results; they
have tried to stop card playing in Port
land and elsewhere and have only suc
ceeded in driving them behind closed
doors, where young men are inveigled

SPURIOUS ANTIQUES.
Many Forgeries Clever Enough to De
ceive the Experts.
In the manufacture of antiquities the
forger shows an ingenuity that is un
limited. Furniture, prints, cblna, pic
tures, plate, armor, ivory. 1 bronxe,
tapestry all are most successfully imi
tated. Many such Imitations are, it
Is true, clumsy enough, bat a great
many deceive even the Initiated. The
experts of national museums have been
Imposed upon more than once.
The British museum bought Pa Us
sy plate for $250. While an attendant
waa handling it one of the seals at
tached to its back, attesting its genu
lneness, became detached, disclosing
the mark of a modern French potter.
Terra cotta figures of Isls and Osiris,
bought by the same institution for
thousands of dollars, were discovered
to be composed of modern clay. There
is one forger of antiquities whose spe
cialty is old leather Jacks; another pro
duces born books; still another turns
out mediaeval manuscripts; a fourth,
clerical vestments of the middle ages,
and so on.
An expert of the Smithsonian insti
tution was called upon not long ago to
pass upon a specimen of a mummy
servant, an effigy, in a plastic material,
such as the Egyptians burled with
their dead. Close examination proved
it to be made of putty. It was a very
clever forgery.
Count TyskJewlez, a noted judge and
collector of antiquities, gives some In
teresting details of the forgeries that
have been attempted from the earliest
times. No metal lent Itself so easily
to this work as gold. Etruscan jewelry
has been largely manufactured la
Italy, but Syria has carried on the
most extensive forgery of gold works
of art Forgeries In silver have been
less successful.
A good story Is told of a forged sil
ver cup in Rome that purported, to
have come from some secret excava
tion In Sicily. This "ancient" cup was
ornamented with a circular bas-relief
representing the frieze of the Parthe
non. In the height of his innocence the
forger, bad given the frieze In its pres
ent ruined condition. The cup obtained
an immediate success shouts of laugh

appeal to the Well-Informed In every walk of life and are essential to permanent sue
cess and creditable standing, therefore we wish to call the attention of all who would
njoy good health, with its blessings, to the fact that it involves the question of right
1 living with all the term implies. With proper knowledge of what Is best each hour
of recreation, of enjoyment, of contemplation and of effort may lw mndo to contribute
to that end and the use of medicines dispensed wih generally to great advantage, but
as in many instances a simple, wholesome remedy may be invaluable if taken at the
proper time, the California Fig Syrup Co. feels that it is alike Important to present
truthfully the subject and to supply the one perfect laxative remedy which hat won
theappoval of physicians and the world-wide acceptance of the Well-informed because
of the excellence of thetombination, known to all, and the original method of manufac
ture, which is known to the California Fig Syrup Co. only.
' , This valuable remedy has lecn long and favorably known under the name of
Syrup of Figs and has attained to world-wide acceptance as the most excellent of
family laxatives, and as its pure laxative principles, obtained from Senna, are well
known to physicians and the Well-Informed of the world to be the best of natural
laxatives, we have adopted the more elaborate name of Syrup of Figs and Elixir of
Senna as more fully descriptive of the remedy, but doubtless it will always be
called for by the shorter name of Syrup of Figs and to get its beneficial effects always
note, when purchasing, the full name of the Company California Fig Syrup Co.
plainly printed on the front of every package, whether you simply call for Syrup of
Figs or by the full name Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna as Syrup of Figs and
Elixir of Senna is the. one laxative remedy manufactured by the California Fig Syrup

satisfaction to millions. The genuine is for sale by all leading druggists throughout
the United States in original packages of one size only, the regular price of which

misbranded within the meaning of the Food and Drugs Act, June 30th, 1906.
