On Satunluy evening, at noticed In
the Attorian, Sumliiy iiiornlng, informa
tion wa received that tho body of a
man hud !' found on the beach, near
tha jetty. It waa thought that it might
b that of Jamet Edward, who wa
drowned from the dredger AV. 8. Ladd,
on Deruber lltli latt, and for tha dis
covery of which a reward of $.10 wo
offered, A party of friendt of Mr, Ed
wards, accompanied by tho coroner and
an Attorian reporter, left on th launch
Iftilda, on Sunday morning, for th
teen to bring the body to the city. Tb
party consitted of OflVier Jo Wilson, W.
If. Snow ami A. G. Snow, all personal
friendt who were determined to find tb
body. (Shortly aftoi Waving the Calen
der dock the wind freabened, and by th
time th Iif-uving station waa reached,
where it was intended to take on tha
life-saving crew, with a turf boat, tha
wind wat blowing at th rat of 60
mi lei an hour and a high aea was run
ning. After taking the crew th
machinery of the boat broke
down and th turf boat cap
tized which aued some excitement
for a while. Tb machinery was Anally
adjusted, sufficiently, to nal)l a re
turn to the boat bouse of th sendee,
where th party debarked and against a
hurricane, in a pelting rain, struggled
to tb station where they met Capt.
Wiekland who offered thera shelter and
telephoned the condition to Mr. Orald
firagnall, aistant engineer in charge of
tli engineering department at Fort
Suvn, who kindly tendered tha us of
nit cm-itie to carry the party out on the
. - .
jetty to tho nearest point to where the
toly bad been located. For tb past 10
c'ays Mr. Bragnall had hi men on th
lookout for the body and it wat one of
the men, Wni. Sperry, who discovered it
w hile patrolling the beach. Engineer J.
If, JfrCralh and Fireman Will Timma
kindly volunteered to get up ateam, and
run the engine, and, after th delay'
norcssary, of about half an hour, the j
rescuers started out en th jetty. At'
station No, 6 a stop waa mad and the
party, augmented by volunteers from the
engineering department, proceeded across
th jetty sands, to th beach where the
body waa found lodged In driftwood,
above the wash of tb regular tide. A
glance at the lifeleaa form waa sufficient
for the true friend of th unfortunate
man, who bad gon through a great deal
of discomfort and aom danger, to secure
the body, and they were overcome for
soma minutes. Willing bands placed the
body on a rude carrier and against a
wind that waa blowing about 70 milea
an hour laboriously carried the remains
fully three quarters of a mile to where
the engine and ftatcar were waiting. The
car waa then hauled to the dock at
Hammond where tb body waa placed
in a receiving casket and conveyed to
the city on the Ilulda, whose machinery
had been adjusted in the meantime. At
4 o'clock the party arrived in the city
and th body wat taken to the coroner's
office.
The liie saving crew at Toljit Adams
rendered valuable assistance which was
highly appreciated.
At 1:30 yesterday afternoon the body
waa interred in Greenwood cemetery, a
number of close friends, whom had been
notified, attending. Rev. W. S. Gilbert
performed the funeral ceremonies . and
th flora offeringa were very fine.
The teal of the friends who sooured
the body and brought it to tho city, was
something commendable, and not to be
dampened by the wind and rain, nor
other obstacle that wore thrown in their
way by the untoward, conditions. Th
many friends of Mr. Edwards in the
city feel grateful to them, and to those
whose kindness made it possible to ac
complish what they atarted out to do.
