NEW SWIMMING RECORD.
CHICAGO, Jan. 10.-Frank Sullivan
swimming director of the Illinois Ath
tetic tlub, last night established a new
professional record for remaining under
water, staying in the bottom of the tank
for three minutes. The former mark of
2:20 was held by Finney, ana English
swimmer. The Briton gave his exhibi
tion in a glass tank, in which the water
was kept at a temperature of 83 de
grees. The feat was performed in water
at a temperature of 76 degrees.
MURDER AT RAVENSDALE.
SEATTLE, Jan. IS. William Peck
and Gus Gierman were arrested at Rav-
ensdale today charged with holding up
a saloon at Kangley, and murdering the
proprietor, Samuel Johnson. ' I

CROSSED THE CONTINENT IN 1843,
The Astorian was in recent, last
nlht, of authentic information of the
death, at Empire City, Ore, yeaterday
morning at 3 a. ni of Mrs. I'hos. Owens,
an old pioneer of Oregon known from
boundary to boundary, I)r. Owens Adair,
while a guest of Mr. S. F. Mimson, at
Wkrrenton, received a telegram an
noundug the death of her mother, Mrs.
Thoa. Owvih, and left on the 6:10 train
en route to Empire City, last night.
Mrs. 0ve was the mother of Dr.
Owetis Adair, and grandmother of Mrs.
C. W. Fulton and Mm. G. C Fulton, of
this city, aud was one of the pioneers of
Clatsop county. Se was born in Ken
tuoky, January 6, 181!. At the ago of
16 she married Thoa. Owens, who wa
then Sheriff of Pike county, Kentucky
In 1843 she and her husband crossed the
continent and came to Clatsop Plains,
Ten years later they removed to Rose-
burg, Ore., where they remained until
1807, and then removed to Trinity coun

known as Fiety Mil. Shortly afterward.
after burying her husband and son, she
returned to Oregon, keeping a home of
her own, but at times living with her
children. For several years she has been
living at Empire City in the quiet of
old age. N
Thus passes away one of the founders
of our great northwestern empire. One
who by passing through the tribulations
and hardships of a trip across this broad
continent, and the trials of pioneer life,
has made it possible for us to enjoy rife
in growing cities where stood the track
less forests. ,

Mrs. Owens, as stated above, has visited
her descendants and was always a wel
come gwt, her appearance being looked
