Immediately take stops to separate
Jimmy Keut's path from hers-JIminy,
who had lent her bis red boll to play
with the very flrst day sho went to
kindergarten.
James Kent, unconscious of the
heavy cloud of suspicion hovering over
him, came from bis ocean swim and
lay idly on the sand, hoping Minim
would get over her headache and walk
down to the beach. Finally, sunburn
ed and glowing, be went back to the
hotel and found bcr on the veranda,
gazing listlessly at the sea.
"Is It as bad as all that, little girl)
Yon are the most forlorn looking speci
men I ever saw," he said as ho sat on
the porch rail and eyed her commls
eraUngly. Minna, seeing the sympathy in bis
eyes, wished fervently that they were
any other color than black. ,
"What on enrth in;ide you havoblack
eyes, Jimmy? I dislike them she
said petulantly. '
Jimmy opened the offending orbs
very wide In bis surprise. 7 ?-
"By Jove, you are a queer one, Min
na I You told me yesterday down on
the beach that I had the most beauti
ful eyes you cvtr saw. Positively made
me blush to know I was so beautiful.
'Frald to sleep In tbem last night lest
I should spoil 'em. And now-Mlnnn,
you haven't uiet any fellow with gray
eyes, have you?" he asked suspiciously.
"No, I haven't," indignantly, "but
black eyes are treacherous and I nev
er conld trust them."
Whether they were treacherous or
not was left an open qnestlon, but
they certainly proved persuasive, and
finally Jimmy was In possession of the
Whole story.
"Minna Bced, you ought to be asham
ed of yourself! Do I look like a blight
ing sorrow?" mimicking ber forlorn
tone. "I might l mistaken for a prize
fighter," exhibiting bis muscular arm
with pride, "but I'm blamed if I'd
know how to start out In the blighting
sorrow business."
Minna, anxious to believe, still look
ed dubious.
"If your eyes only weren't black!"
sbe sighed.
"Now, look here, ray child. I'd get
a special act of congress to change
them to suit you If I could. You know
I've done everything to please you all
my life. Why will you believe that ut

tangible that you absolutely know was

lawyer and wanted to contest all evi

"She told me my name and age," tri
umphantly. "Didn't you have to write It on a
piece of paper first?" suspiciously.
"Y-yes, but she didn't see it hon
estly she didn't I folded it tightly
and put it on the table, and she sat
and toyed with it while sho talked."
"Tho mischief sho didn't see it!"
growled Jimmy. "Anything else?"
"Sbe said I bad an Aunt Mary in the
spirit land that was trying to guide
me," hesitatingly, 1
"See there! You never bad an Aunt
Mary In your life! It's all pluln hum

tlon of one willing to lcavo bis case lu
the bands of an Intelligent Jury.
"Np, I never bad, but mamma bad
and tbe clairvoyant said aunts and
great-aunts were all tbe same in tbe

Jimmy positively groaned with die

"She might safely hit on on Aunt
Mary. ' Nearly everybody living has an
aunt or great-aunt or great-great-great

Queer Actions of a Stranger la Town
Yesterday-iWho Can He Be?
For a few minutes yesterday Frank
Donnerberg thought himself the victim
of a bold hold up. During a lull in
bustncM, when he was alone in the store
a tall athletic appearing man approached
the counter, behind which Mr. Donner
berg was standing, and asked to be
4hown some diamond rings. With pros
Mots of a good sale dancing before his
eyes the urbane Frank responded with
alacrity. After carefully examining the
glittering array of gems, the stranger
placed one of them on his linger, and
mirveying it with the eye of an expert,
anked the price. When told the price,
1100, he offered to pay with a check on
a Salt Lake bank, but Donnerberg de
manded the coin of the realm. Tbe vlsl
tor remarked that the ring looked pretty
good, and that he could pawn It, He
then drew from his pocket a long bar
relied revolver, which to the now fright
ened jeweler looked as large a one of
the big gun at Fort Stevens. Affec
tlonatoly caressing it he said he would
not pawn the shooting Iron as It was
his friend. For probably two minutes
which seemed hours, lie carressed his
pot and taking the ring from his finger
he laid it on the show case and asked
if there .was a bank ln town and being
answered In the affirmative stated that
he would get the money and return. He
did not return and the police have been
unable to find him. t ,
It U stated that an individual sue
ceeded in cashing a Salt Lake check in
town and lost the proceeds In a gam
bling game. The biter was bitten.
