Says She Wont Work Any More as She

CHICAGO, Jan. 14. "I guess I -wont
work any more," remarked Miss Rose
Stranti as the resigned her position yes
terday as telephone operator at the
Palmer House. '
Then she told Manager Vierbuchen
she had Inherited $60,000 left by an
npl in the Far West and had received
the first installment of the money. She
invited hen friends among the hotel
employes to a theater where they oc
cupied two boxes, and after the show
she gave them a ten-course dinner.
After the dinner she called an auto
mobile, bade her friends good-bye and
was ilriven to the residence of a friend.
Her home is at Laporte, Indiana. '
OREGON LAND CASES.
Judge Becker Appointed by Bonaparte
to Assist F. J. Eeney.
PORTLAND, Jan. 14. Judge Tracey
C. Becker of Buffalo, New York, who
was appointed by Attorney-General
Bonaparte to continue the investiga
tions made by the Southern Pacific Com
pany's Oregon land grant matters and
also to assist F. J. Ileney in the prose
cution of the Oregon land frauds, ar
rived here today from California. Mr.
Becker's connection with the prosecution
of the alleged land fraud cases will be
gin tomorrow morning and according to
the present program, he will remain in
Portland and prosecute the cases re
maining on the docket after Heney
finishes the present case.

Yesterday was a good day on the bar
and but little change took . place
throughout the day. At 8 a. ni. the
wind was from the eatt blowing 10 utiles
bar moderate. These conditions were
not changed until 4 o'clock p. in. and
the only change noted was that the
wind had died down to five miles, an
hour. Two vessel passed in and the
same number crossed out.
To steam schooner Cascade lumber
laden, left out for San Francisco, at
8:23 a. an yesterday.
The eteam schooner Northland arrived
in from San Francisco at 8:30 yesterday
morning, and left up at 11 :30.
The steamer Alliance arrived down
from Portland yesterday at 0 a. m. and
immediately left out for Coos Bay.
The Geo. Wf Elder arrived la San
Francisco yesterday morning early.
The Lurline came in on time yester
day afternoon, with a fair cargo and
passenger list, and left up at 7 o'clock
with the usual freight and number of
passengers. Capt. I-arkiu reports things
quiet along the river.
The steam schooner R. D. In man left
San Francisco, on Monday night, for the
Columbia river.
The British bark Lady Wolseley left
up fop Portland at 12:45 p. m. yester
day. The German steamer Numantia from

Portland, arrived at Yokohama on Jan
uary 11th.
The French bark General de BoMcffre
arrived in yesterday. She sailed from
Rochester, Eng., and is loaded with
cement for Portland, and when sne
reached here and was boarded by the
custom officer, Capt. J. Larogue was un
able to produce a manifest. The captain
is In hopes that the owners of the ves
sel mailed the manifest to Portland and
a telegraph message ha been sent ask
ing its speedy delivery here, if there, to
save the captain a flue of $500. Accord
ing to law Captain Larogue has 48 hours,
after arrival in which to make entry at
the custom house and if the manifest
has been mailed to Portland and in turn
remailed to Astoria so as to reach here
before tomorrow noon all will be well,
otherwise the captain will be fined $300.
An explanatin as to how the captain
failed to have a manifest has been of
fered. The vessel sailed from Rochester
and at London received a clear bill of
health, but no manifest. The vessel
came via Hobart still no manifest, and
when he reached here the captain had
only a clear bill of health. If the mani
fest does not reach here from Portland
the fine will be imposed.

January 10 an unlighted gas buoy was
placed about '300 feet westerly of Clat
sop Spit Buoy, 8, for experimental pur
poses only.
Should it be 'demonstrated that the
buoy does not watch properly, it will be
