Hippopotamus n Central Park
Zoo Is Dead.
LARGEST ANIMAL OF BREED
Millions of PsopU Rave Gaud Upon the
Enormous Brute Whose Weight Ws

Been Seared.
NEW YORK, Jan. 10.-"CHph," lbs
great hippopotamus which u 22 years
in the Ceutral Park Zoo Is dead. For
several days he had been ailing and la
spite of all the keepers could do for him,
be gradually grew worse. Laat night the
headkeeper entered hi enclosure to see
what could be done for bitn. Caliph
rolled his little eyes, gave a grunty
gtwan and expired. ; ,.,
Caliph was about 34 years old and
was the largest animal of his breed in
America,' weighing something like four
tons. Since the day 22 years ago, when
be end his mate, "Miss Murphy" ar
rived la the Zoo be baa been one of the
most attractive animals there and mil
lions of people have gaud at him as he
waddled around bis enclosure, occa
sionally opening his enormous mouth
seemingly pleased with the wonder he
created. For years Caliph and Miss
Murphy were happy together, in off
spring blessing their union. The last
of these, Peter, was taken away from
the park a year ago when be was three
years old. After that Miss Murphy be
gan to grow peevish and frequently at
tacked her mild mannered spouse. Final
ly so bad did her temper become that
the two animals were separated. Since
that time, except for brief Intervals,
they have occupied separate cages. Miss
MSirphy baa not yet reallced that her
spouse is dead. It is said that the hippo's
equivalent of a stork is hovering over
the Zoo. It has not been decided what
will be done with Caliph's carcass. He
was valued at 3000. ;

pains in my loins. My chief source of
trouble was with my kidneys, which
were very irregular in action. Doan's

as highly of his remedy today, as when
I gave a public statement some years
