THE NIGHTINGALE.
Coleridge's Defeme of the 8ongter a
Not a Melancholy Bird.
I The traditional view of the nlghtln
$33 per gale's hour Is supremely given lu the
familiar lyric ny Richard Barneneiu.
Here the poet finds the forlorn bird,
with "her luvnst up-tlll a thorn," ear
nestly pouring forth ber melodious sor
row. Milton in bis juvenile sonnet
apostrophizes tbc Ineffable singer as
1 (tivlng forth notes that portend success
Id love, ami wiicu lie comes 10 de
scribe solier pleasures In "II Pense
roso" he appropriately finds the same
strains "most musical, most melan
choly." Agalust this Coleridge enters
4 vigorous protest In "The Nightingale;
a Conversation Toem," characteristic
ally advancing lu tbe following pas
sage a general truth and a specific
criticism:
A melancholy bird? Oh, Idle thoughtl
(n nature there Is nothing melancholy.
But soma night wandering man whose
heart was pierced
With the remembrance of a grievous
wrong
Or slow distemper or neclected love
(And so, poor wretch, filled all things with
himself
And made all gentle sounds tell back the
tale
Of his own sorrow), he, and such as he,
First named theso note a melancholy
strain.
Annotating this, tbe poet further Il
lustrates his philosophic acuteness and
takes the opportunity of expressing
his loyalty to his eminent poetical pred
ecessor. "This passage In Milton," the
note runs, "possesses an excellence far
superior to that of mere description.
U Is spoken lu the character of the
melancholy nmn and has therefore a
dramatic propriety. The author makes
this remark to rescue himself from the
charge of having alluded with levity
to a Hue lu Milton, a charge than
which uoue could be more painful to
him except jierhiips that of having
ridiculed his Bible."
In a letter to Christopher North,
Wordsworth refers to the "false no
tions" regardlug the nightingale's song
and expresses his belief that Cole
ridge's poem, with Its theory that "In
nature there Is nothing melancholy,"
will In all likelihood "contribute great
ly to rectify these." In his own poem
"Enterprise" he touches on the same
point and alludes to the nightingale as
"the sweet bird, misnamed the melan
choly.". It Is hardly necessary to add
that Keats In his great ode "To a
Nightingale" rises to exquisite rapture
over the happiness manifested in the
staging of the "light winged dryad of
the trees." London Notes and Queries.
