GET THE RIGHT MAN!
Tomorrow night at the first meeting
of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce
must be nominated and elected, and so
far as can be ascertained, there is no
particular choice apparent. It will be
distinctly up to the live Astorians pres

tions in each of the several cases, and
this will be for the better in the end
It will show there had been no combina

, We can easily trace the flaw to our
absolute lack of community -spirit; the
oneness of sentiment and purpose that
moves things because of the irresistable
force that compels respect and conces
sion; the essence of power that will not
be denied nor thwarted.
It is this very faculty that has plac
ed Portland at the supreme head of the
commercial life of Oregon, and keepsi
her there. It is the most immensely
valuable item of local equipment. And
the city or town without it, must culti
vate it, or side-step the good things that
else would be theirs.
The best and nearest expression of
this spirit in Astoria lies in the big
'fact of the successful maintenance of
our Chamber of Commerce, and this is
making a widespread impression in
favor of the city; but it is not enough
to simply maintain the Chamber. We
must do the things that come directly
from that policy, and band ourselves
as a solid unit for ACCOMPLISHMENT.
To devise things that may be done for
the public good, is but the first meagre
step. To do things after they have
been proven excellent and requisite re
quires something beside "hot air'; it
takes composite, undivided action sus
tained by an inspiration of success ut
terly impossible short of a wide unani
mity of communal hand and brain (es
pecially the hand, with something in it).
It is said to be impossible to "teach

preparation has extended to all parts of
the United states and to many foreign
countries. Its many remarkable cures
of coughs and colds have won for it this
wide reputation and extensive use. Sold

Fever Sores.
Fever sores and old chronic sores
should not be healed entirely, but should
be kept in healthy condition. This can
be done by applying Chamberlain's Salve.
This salve has no superior for this pur
pose. It is also most excellent for chap
ped hands, sore nipples, burns and dis
eases of the skin. For sale by Frank
Hart and leading druggists.

mendations as faithful Christian work
ers and will no doubt be of great service
in building up the work of the churches
in the city.
