Negroes are rapidly leaving Henryetta where the lynching of James Garden, a negro, occurred Tuesday after tlie mur der of Albert Bates, a prominent white business man. The blacks were given notice to get out of the town within 48 hour. A seofuul attack was made on the jail early yesterday by a mob of citi xens, who sought a one-eyed negro nam! Bill Smith, charged mith inciting Garden to commit the crime. Sheriff Robertson, however, spirited the man away from tne mob and took him to Okmulgee. That New York City rest on a vast mas of gar nets, is the discovery of Ralph E. Mor gan, an Englinb mineralologist now vis iting here. Mr. Morgan, while passing the subway excavation in Thirty-third street stopped to look at the mas of rock thrown up and discovered a large garnet in the pile. n learned that the rock excavated was dumped at Sbeeps head Boy and at once visited the dump ing ground, here he found a number of excellent garnets. WASHINGTON, Dec. 27.-A number of administrative rulings were issued today by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Employes of produce com panies must pay full fare in traveling to points on carrier's lines where they expect to secure consignment and be come caretakers; that the limitation of rates to shipments handled by steam tower, as against those handled by elec tric power, is unlawful and must be eliminated from th tariff.' The grant ing by carriers of oommissons to per sons acting as consignees on import mer chandise is a practice that cannot b sanctioned. The commission has no power to relieve carriers from the obli gation of tariffs, providing the demur jge charges, on the ground that such charges have been occasioned by a strike. ,.', ': . When after a complaint is made and before a hearing, a rate is reduced to the sum demanded by the complainant the order disposing of the proceeding shall require the maintenance of that rate as the maximum for not less than hvro years. BATTLE WITH ROBBERS. Italians Fight Masked Highwaymen With Axe and Shovel. SEATTLE, Dec 27. At Snohomish tonight two masked men visited a cabin occupied by a party of Italians and or dered them to throw up their hands. The demand not being promptly obeyed the robbers opened fire, three men falling. Then commenced a battle, the Italians using an axe and shovel with which they killed one of the highwaymen, ser iously injuring the other. The injured Italians were taken to a hospital The others were arrested. STEEL FILES P0ND. SALEM, Or.. Dec 27. State Treas urer Steel's bond was filed with the Governor at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The total amount was $634,500, $20,000 more is on the way. Besides this Mr. Steel was offered $95,000 more if neces sary to make up the bond. The total number of bondsmen was 95. The sums pledged varied in amounts from $1000 to $50,000. LABOR LEADERS VAMOSE. HELENA, Mont., Dec 27. United States Marshal Merrifield has been un able to serve Judge Hunt's order on six Butte labor leaders, who were cited to appear in court this morning to show cause why they should not be punished for contempt of court, for alleged viola tion of a recent injunction, restraining all persons from interfering wiith the operations of the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company in this state. PROSECUTION NOT AFFECTED Investigation Shows That Colton Securi ties Found Tucked Away in California Safe Deposit & Trust Company's Vault Are Not the Missing Bonds; SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 27. An nouncement that the missing securities of the Colton estate had been tucked away in an odd corner in the California Safe Deposit 4 Trust Company, caused a stir among the officials of the District Attorney's office, which is directing the prosecution of bankers Brown and Bar net, w-ho are the accused in the case. Investigation showed that only a few stock certificates had been unearthed by Receiver Cuhing and they do not ap pear of negotiable character. It is said that the finding of the stocks will have no effect on the prosecution of Brawn and Barnett as they have not been accused of embmlement of the stocks unearthed today. The missing bonds are valued at $250,000, and have not been located. Bartnett appeared before the . grand jury this afternoon and gave testimony regarding the missing securities of the California Safe Deposit & Trust. Com pany. Bartnett was a voluntary wit ness. He was under examination over an hour. Nothing was made public con cerning his evidence. " RENT STRIKE. Residents of Ghetto May Refuse to Pay High Rents. CHICAGO, Dec 27. The possibility that residents in the congested districts of the West Side might emulate the lower East Side t New York City, and likewise call a "rent strike," was duly discussed In the . Ghetto yesterday. About 700 people held a meeting last Saturday at which plans for the organi zation of a "Union of Tenants" were made. The rents are higher in the Ghetto than" anywhere else in the city, is ad mitted even by the landlords, who say this is the inevitable result of "congestion."
