THE M01WING ASTORIAN, ASTOHIA. OREGON. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14. 1007. RECRUITING OFFICE! BUSY i1' . ; ' 1 ' i '" i- . 1,. : v' -iVK v .... v KANT RECRUITS ARE ENTERING THE SERVICE OF UNCLE SAM UCK OF EMPLOYMENT A PRIME , ' FACTOR. , Sergeant K, I). Skinner, of the re rtiitir.g service, who has been her since May 25th last, has received orders to tc hit oflko here, at the end of the year, and will probably open hit new leadquarter at Central'!, Wash, fter lit removal from Astoria. Sergeant Skinner has been very suo esafnl in securing recruits, his thorvugn knowledge of army lite and of human ature being a, valuable help. The off! rr W a very pleasant young man and Baa during his stay here; made many friends who will regret his going away, Speaking of the results of his work, kAatoria, he said: ,! Tl hsve been very successful in seeur fcg-recruits in this section. Of late the . Msnlta hare been of the best, the class f ma offering themselves being very good. Ysung, healthy men, capable of entering any field of laboring work, have applied for enlistment, and we art able & jbe choice in our selection. I ascribe ffti condition of affairs to the closing mi of industries and the lack of work fulr laboring men. Single men without tfe to bind them are coming into the mice, not caring to take their chances B securing employment in an over crowded field. In Portland many young Men are enlisting, to take advantage of tie opportunities of technical education. Cpne are enlisting in the different . branches of the service such as, civil ugineering, mechanical engineering, Wackamithing, etc, and will take the times in t)ose branches. The Portland See is doing a good business and no doubt will continue to do so. '("A I said, present conditions have muck to do with the number of recruits. IJogging camps, mills, etc, are closing down and the flower of the land, in the way of husky men are plentiful, and wjiemployed. The army offers an open lag to them, that is being taken advant age of, hence the gojod results. I expect, before leaving here to add many more names to the roster." , E. R. Budd, superintendent TJwaco' Eaitraad Company, came over on the ' Jfarcohta yesterday, and proceeded to! Portland last night A. G. Delanr. of Chieasro. arrived in Astoria Thursday.
