It is intimates, however, that if the Japanese govern ment learns that it is the intention of the navy department to haT" Admiral Evans' fleet return to the Atlantic from its Pacific cruise by way of Asia and the Mediterranean, an Jnvitatirm will be forthcoming to have the ships pass a fortnight in Japanese ports, where th4 personnel will be hospitably Teceived. Astoria i the very center of the largest black sand deposits on the PaciAe Coast. The subject of black sands has been handled by Professors David T. Day and R. II. Rk-hards and government rcxrt have been issued upon their investigations. This report entitled "Illack Sands of . the Pacific Slope" mid was 1ued in 1005. Another pamphlet is Senate Document No. 2-12 of the second session of the 50th Congre- What we desire to ak vou to do is o turn your scientific mind upon the iiiivortnnt problem of ninnufacfcilng iron of the black rands through some proceM that would .be practical com mercially. So far it is not a commercial proposition, this mnnufacttirnlg of iron from these aands, although Professor Day ha said there was as much a 1500 to 1900 pound of iron per ton in the sand about Astoria We believe that if this question ran be solved by any one in the United States, you are are the man who ran tiolve it. As there is practically an tin limiited quantity of this sand, the per fecting of the process, that would en able iron and steel to be cheaper nianu fact u red out of it, would revolutionize the iron and steel indutries of the world. We might also add, that there are other metals in these sands Including gold and platinum. Recognizing the already wonderful achievements to your credit In the my terions realms of science, achievements which bsve assured yot a most lasting iiace among me immonais, we neueve that should you solve this problem of the black sand, you have done more thereby for the benefit of mankind than through all of your pat inventions, great as they are. , If you will consent to the taking up of this line of investigation, we will endeavor to have CongTcs make an np propriation for that specific purpose. We would be very highly pleased in deed If we could get you to interet yourtelf in investigations along taU line and If you see your way to take ii the subject, we will be glad to hear from ou and assist you In any way that you may suggest, Yours very truly, THE CHAMBER OF UOMMRRCB, By J.
